Elia Kazan turns 93
Born September 7, 1909 in Turkey, Elia Kazan made a big name for himself as a movie director, particularly for A Streetcar Named Desire.
As a foolish youth Kazan dabbled in the commie nonsense fashionable among the literati. However he earned great ire from his old Hollywood pals by appearing as a friendly witness in front of the House Unamerican Activities Committee. He ultimately won the debate from his critics by pure artistic force, making his most highly regarded movie as a metaphorical defense. On the Waterfront starred full-strength young Marlon Brando rebeling against a corrupt labor union, explaining why he switched sides.
The cool people, however, pick as Kazan's masterpiece A Face in the Crowd, 1957. This tale of corrupt media figures follows the rise of a surprisingly evil young Andy Griffith like you never seen. Scene after scene of sexy wrongness- and a potent argument against democracy, really.
