Ghettopoly- Hilarious fun for the whole family!
So this Asian-American has come up with a clever little parody of the classic Monopoly game called "Ghettopoly" which features a lot of pimpin' and dope and such. Naturally, the perpetually aggrieved are, not suprisingly, aggrieved, hollering about this game promoting racism and such.
As Sgt. Hulka said to Psycho in Stripes, "Lighten up, Francis."
Naturally Hasbro doesn't appreciate the association and they're suing. I can understand their position, but Ghettopoly can reasonably be seen as a legitimate parody of this most iconic American game, and how those capitalist ideas play out in the cheap seats.
There's more than one way to take something like this Ghettopoly. Some professionally agitated black folk will insist on taking it as belittling your race, as if the intent was to foment hate against black folk. It's part of the conspiracy to repress the colored races.
That likely is not the intent of the creator, nor how it will mostly be taken. A white person who really dislikes black people as a group would be unlikely to be interested in this game. I would guess that in fact black folk will be the top market.
These stereotypes are based on some actual truth on the ground, but get overgeneralized and exaggerated. That's how stereotypes generally work. They're insidious because they often have enough truth under them to make it easy to fall into unfairly painting whole bunches of people with a broad brush.
Ghettopoly could be taken as a satire of stereotypes. They're blowing them up. They're distilling and exagerrating black ghetto stereotypes to the point of absurdity.
Is anyone going to see this game, and then decide on that basis that this is how black folks really are? I doubt it. Was such even the intention of the creator? I doubt that too.
I would really dig a game of Cracker-opoly, with monster truck rallies and trailer park properties. It'd be a hoot. Doubtless it would be quite popular with the crackers. It would be a great follow-up to Ghettopoly- and he wouldn't get a bunch of whiny butts protesting their victimhood in response.
Ah, I see from his website that the creator of Ghettopoly is working on a game of "Redneckopoly"- and asking for suggestions. Go ahead, help him out.
Oh, and us country boys still dig Hee-Haw and The Beverly Hillbillies.

Thumbs up for Kid Notorious
Comedy Central premiered a new animated comedy Wednesday night, 10-22-03. I vote thumbs up!
Kid Notorious relates the adventures of a Hollywood producer. The cheerful cynicism of the title character comes with a swashbuckling sense of adventure.
Part of that pirate ethic comes out in the provocative ethnic humor. Bloods and Crips are enacting a hip-hop Broadway musical rendition of The Godfather (including a huge prop dismembered horse head hanging over the stage) while Italian mafiosos chase the Kid through the rafters, ready to shoot him over a bad investment in a Sharon Stone picture.
Kid Notorious finds himself routinely juggling ethnic issues like they were just so many over-inflated movie star egos. The "olive oil leg breakers" are OUTRAGED that another ethnic group would defile the sacred Godfather material- and are only belatedly consoled by the fact that it (naturally) turns out to be a money making hit for them. The mafia "goombahs" specifically identify the Kid himself as Hebrew, natch.
The whole thing comes out pretty funny, especially the Sharon Stone satire, particularly her one woman Broadway production of the Vagina monologues as Sharon Stone's Vagina. As Kid Notorious notes, "We've all seen Sharon Stone's vagina- and it can't act either."
The special breakout star of the show could turn out to be the Kid's non-talking kitten, Puss Puss. In this pilot, Puss Puss starts going into gangsta mode in sympathy with the Bloods and Crips they're hanging with. Puss Puss particularly amused me by pistol whipping their butler, English. Also, naturally Puss Puss was down with the chronic.
We'll see if they can consistently maintain the high amusement factor of the pilot. So far, so good. I for one will be looking forward to the next episode.

Bi-partisan love!
What could supposedly evil right wing extremists do to prove their hearts are full of love? Supporting Al Sharpton for the Democrat nomination to be POTUS seems like something we should ALL be able to get behind.
This is a cause all of us can unite behind. Surely good liberals love having this progressive voice to speak for them. Certainly all good conservatives, Republicans and Libertarians will be only too happy to help give Reverend Sharpton the prominent platform he deserves to speak for Democrats. They certainly deserve him.
Damn, but I'm looking forward to voting in the primary. It's good to be able to support a man of God for the highest office in the land. I'm going to enjoy this more than any vote I've cast since supporting Reverend Pat Robertson.
