Prince live at the local cineplex
Now this looks like a pretty sweet deal. One night only- March 29, 2004- Prince will be beaming his live concert to 32 movie theaters across the country. For $15, you'll get a good view from a movie screen- and probably a better view than you would by paying $50-75 for a ticket to some 3 million seat arena to be mostly watching him on a video monitor anyway.
Besides which, this $15 includes a copy of his new album Musicology, which does not have any distribution at this time and will apparently not yet be available in stores at all.

Muhammad Ali, voice of conscience
Forty years ago today, March 6, 1964, world boxing champ and recently converted Muslim Cassius Clay changed his name to Muhammad Ali, scaring the bejesus out of whitey. Ha! Whitey NEEDED scaring. Having been but one year old at the time, it's a bit difficult for me now to gauge what people at the time were thinking, but I can imagine how this put the fear of Allah into the crackers. Some folk seemed to think that this mighty warrior was getting ready to lead some kind of violent Negro uprising.
It was exactly three years later, on March 6, 1967 that he really got to start showing his devotion to conscience though, as the US military tried to draft him. He had no beef with anyone in Vietnam, noting that no Vietnamese had ever called him "nigger," so he was not going to be involved in making war on them.
It cost him years knocked out of fighting in the prime of his career, and could easily have gotten him prison time. But he stood up for what he believed, and time has certainly reflected well on his actions. In retrospect, he looks like not just the greatest professional boxer ever, but a great voice of conscience as well.
Down here on the farm, we're also proud to claim him as a brother Kentuckian.

Marge Schott was a good ol' gal
Marge Schott passed away today at age 75. She was a business woman and philanthropist, and famously the former owner of the Cincinnati Reds.
Marge Schott was real. She was genuine. She was the very opposite of a politician. She spoke her mind freely. Granted, this meant she said a few dumb, silly things.
Nonetheless, she had a heart as big as all outdoors. She loved her hometown. She loved her danged silly dogs. She was the greatest civic booster around. She was also at the reigns the last time we won a World Series.
Marge Schott was a good ol' gal. We'll miss her.

Glenn Miller's 100th birthday
Glenn Miller was born 100 years ago today, on March 1, 1904 in Clarinda, Iowa.
He led the most popular big band of the swing era. He disbanded his orchestra, however, when WWII came to join the army and entertain the troops full time. He died December 14, 1944 in a plane crash. He was a big enough deal to have no less than Jimmy Stewart starring in his biopic.
Among his best known groovy recordings were
In the Mood
Chattanooga Choo Choo
Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree
Tuxedo Junction
Moonlight Serenade
String of Pearls
For a tangential bit of Miller coolness, no less a hipster than Peter Sellers arranged to have "In the Mood" played at his own funeral while he was being lowered into the dirt.

Roger Daltrey turns 60
Born March 1, 1944, Roger Daltrey turns 60 today. "Hope I day before I get old." Oops, too late! Happy birthday, old man.
Depending on how you're categorizing such things, Daltrey is perhaps the greatest hard rock singer ever. His climactic scream in "Won't Get Fooled Again" alone qualifies him for a place in history.
Everybody knows his work with the Who. Without Pete's songs, his solo records mostly aren't that interesting. One little solo tidbit well worth looking up, however, is the song "Free Me," from the McVicar soundtrack. [Not sure who wrote it.] It's worthy of the Who.
