Bitch badly needs a whackin'
Why is this fool not a grease spot already? From CNN.com:

The militant Shiite Muslim cleric whom the U.S.-led coalition has vowed to capture or kill warned of suicide attacks Friday if American forces conduct military action in the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf.

At a prayer service in Najaf, Muqtada al-Sadr said his followers would "shed blood to keep our holy city," according to Reuters.

The U.S. military has massed troops around Najaf, a south-central city controlled by al-Sadr's militia, the Mehdi Army. Al-Sadr is wanted by Iraqi authorities in connection with the killing of a rival cleric

"Lots of believers, men and women, came to me and asked permission to become martyrs and to execute martyrdom operations. I keep telling them to wait," Reuters quoted the cleric as saying.

"But if there was an assault on our cities or on our religious authorities we will be time bombs and will not stop before destroying enemy forces."

He's had his militia actively in combat shooting at US troops, and terrorizing the locals besides. Now he's threatening to turn loose the suicide bombers.

Al-Sadr is operating openly in Najaf. The picture there has him at a press conference, speaking to dozens of microphones. It's not like they don't know where he's at.

He's alive why? This guy, and any self-identified followers need to be taken out with extreme prejudice. If what al-Sadr's doing won't get you squished like a bug, then it's pretty much open season to screw with Americans at will.

Apparently, any idiot self-declared "cleric" can do pretty much any kind of evil, murdering crap, and we'll be too intimidated by the supposed threat of angering Muslims to deal with them properly. Hey, maybe the Muslims need to be a little more worried about not wanting to anger US.

Send in an Apache and take this murdering bastard and his followers OUT before they kill any more Americans.

William Shakespeare's birthday
William Shakespeare was born 440 years ago today, on April 23, 1564.

If Shakespeare were alive today, he'd be a really old dude driving 20 mph on the freeway and clogging up the Old Country Buffet. But that's not important.

Back in the Y2K runup, George Will among others picked Shakespeare as Man of the Millenium. Hard to pick just one person, but he'd be a good candidate. His work has furthered the human race as much as anyone's. His insights into human nature, his stylistic and structural advances in playwriting, and his pure skill in slinging the English language remain unsurpassed.

His work has, for one thing, been the basis of more movies than anyone else, in all likelihood. Personally, I particularly enjoy the Liz and Dick version of Taming of the Shrew.

By the way, anyone wanting to study Shakespeare should DEFINITELY get Asimov's Guide to Shakespeare. Keep it right there while you're reading. He gave a lot of very useful scene-by-scene explanations of just the kind of historical and literary references that will be obscure and off putting to readers several centuries later.

Funny amputee
I expressed skepticism a few days ago about a new plotline in Doonesbury where a character loses a limb fighting in Iraq. It's been running all week. Today's panel marks the moment when BD wakes up to find his leg gone. In fairness, I must note that it in fact made me laugh.

Simone Simon's birthday
20 PAGES OF SIMONE SIMON PICTURES
Simone Simon was born in France 94 years ago today, on April 23, 1910. I haven't been able to find a picture of her past about 1960, but she must be the hottest 94 year old going. Best guess is that this picture is circa 1942.

She was a much bigger deal back home in France than she ever turned out to be in America. She just never seemed to find the right roles here. Her main best known picture is Cat People, from 1942.

Her claim on my imagination, however, comes from her role as Belle, the demon/succubus from "over the mountain" in The Devil and Daniel Webster from 1941. There has never been a more evil sexy character on a movie screen. Note the exact tone and body language of her mocking rebuff to Stone at the barn dance saying "Oh, NO Mr. Stone- your place is with your WIFE."

The clincher, though, was the image of this literal succubus from hell bent over Stone's infant son, singing some evil otherworldly lullaby. Oh, Mommy!

Indeed, thinking of Ms Simon and looking at her pictures, it's HARD to keep up a proper hatred of the French. I'll have to stop. Eventually.

On the beat with Vic Mackey
If you have any interest in The Shield, you should definitely check out my special corner on the Vic Mackey market. I've got the most detailed episode by episode analysis of this series of any site on the entire frickin' internet.

Heck, I've got over 10,000+ words of notes so far on just the first seven episodes of the current third season.

Doonesbury gets serious
Funny thing: I saw the tail end of a news crawl that was something about a cartoon character losing a leg in Iraq, and I knew. In all of cartoonland, it occured to me in a flash that there was one obvious candidate: BD in Doonesbury.

I haven't even read Doonesbury recently to know that BD was in Iraq, but of course he would be. He's THE conservative out of all the Doonesbury core, as he was when he volunteered to go to Vietnam in order to get out of a college term paper 30+ years ago.

It makes some sense that he would get hit. Trudeau probably thinks of it as a sacrifice for the anti-war effort that he's giving up a leg on a fictional character. Hey, Trudeau has several decades of emotional investment in drawing this character.

The series starts HERE.

I appreciate the intention of dealing seriously with the war, but I'm skeptical here on grounds of NOT BEING FUNNY. Satire and humor are what the funny papers are for. The two beginning strips of this line don't have a punch line of any kind. But being modest still cartoons, they don't have any kind of serious visceral impact either.

I'm just skeptical of this move on an artistic level. But I guess I will actually be watching Doonesbury closer for a while just to see how this storyline plays out.
