New album releases, week of 10-26-2004
Ew-wee, but just the titles listing for this Sony 4 CD set Doctors, Professors, Kings and Queens: The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans really makes me feel all tingly. I will avoid sexual metaphors unbecoming a candidate for high public office, but suffice it to say that this one's going to be a must-have pick o' the month or year.
This set aspires to cover the whole history of recorded music from New Orleans. To that end, it's got lots of famous recordings from Louis Armstrong to Fats Domino to Dr John and Professor Longhair.
What sends the blood flowing to special places though, is the bunch of lesser known groups and recordings representing hidden treasures calling my name.
Of likely interest to dirty, smelly hippies, Rhino has a new 12 CD Grateful Dead set Beyond Description (1973-1989). This set seeks to be a comprehensive collection of all their releases from those years.
Speaking of dirty, smelly hippies, Willie Nelson has a new album, It Always Will Be. Along with originals, this includes songs by Lucinda Williams and Toby Keith among others. The Amazon review sure makes it sound promising.
In the range of the actively annoying, Michael McDonald has a "new" album, Motown Two. Michael McDonald really is a pretty good singer, but not just one but now a second collection of Motown covers shows a true and total lack of imagination.
Some vintage 1957 live Ramblin' Jack Elliott sounds MIGHTY tasty. The Lost Topic Tapes: Isle of Wight 1957 sounds like a positively delicious meal. Must hear!

Indianapolis Star 2004 candidate endorsements
I love Andrew Horning. He's a fine Christian gentleman, and a true friend of liberty. I first buddied up with him back when he was the Libertarian candidate for mayor of Indianapolis some years ago, and dig him the most- even after he jumped horses to run for Congress this year as a Republican.
The season has not been particularly kind to brother Horning, though. Incumbent Democrat Julia Carson (surely one of the least worthy members of Congress to start with) has given only very minimal public appearances, even less than my electoral opponent Evan Bayh.
On top of which, The Indianapolis Star apparently really hates him, for whatever reason. Or at least it seems somewhat personal when they wrote in their official endorsement of Julia Carson,
This editorial page over the years has disagreed with Rep. Julia Carson on almost every issue of substance. That's why, until now, The Star has never endorsed her candidacy.
But this year, unlike in the past, Carson is not facing credible opposition.
Republican Andy Horning, who previously has run as a Libertarian for mayor of Indianapolis and governor of Indiana, is an engaging and intelligent fellow. But in an interview with the Editorial Board he continually lapsed into rambling philosophical discourses rather than giving specific answers.
Dang, but that hardly seems fair, even if you don't agree with Andy's conservative to libertarian philosophy. It might be enough to give someone an attitude.
Indeed, this has even good genteel Andy understandably smoking mad. From WXNT:
Republican congressional candidate Andy Horning is taking issue with the "Indianapolis Star" endorsement of Congresswoman Julia Carson in the upcoming election. In answer, Horning burned a copy of the paper downtown.
"They've never covered any of my press conferences. They covered one debate and got it wrong and had to print a retraction." Speaking to Abdul in the Morning on newstalk 1430, Horning says the paper never asked him any questions concerning his campaign.
I don't know if publicly tangling with the paper like this is the best strategy, but I bet it's emotionally satisfying. I can sure see why he'd want to have a piece of them dirty dogs.
Yet, I'd say that this was better treatment than Kenn Gividen, our candidate for governor. Kenn has run probably the best Libertarian Party campaign I've ever seen. Yet the Star absolutely didn't even mention him in their editorial endorsement of the Republican.
That's cold. Call me a no-good SOB if you want, but at least acknowledge my effort.
In fairness, though, I will say that they did considerably better by me. It was a foregone conclusion that they would endorse Bayh. However, they definitely gave me fair respect.
Bayh's opponents in the Nov. 2 election, Republican Marvin Scott and Libertarian Al Barger, while waging respectable campaigns, have not made the case for unseating him.
Scott's sharp criticism of Bayh as an amoral, free-spending liberal isn't borne out by the record. And Barger's suggestion of abolishing the Social Security tax, for which he maintains there is no constitutional mandate, would be ill advised without an alternative set up to replace it.
For starters, I'm pleased to have been paid the minimal acknowledgement of being addressed, as well as being said to have had a "respectable" campaign.
I'm even considerably more pleased that they addressed my central campaign issue, and the particularly important constitutional question about Social Security.
That's all I ask, just some basic respect. They acknowledged me and addressed my top issue. Then we let the voters take it from there.
Thank you.

Ashlee Simpson's SNL Meltdown
Part of the beauty of live tv is the danger. There's a chance that something's going to slip, causing who knows what embarassment. Such was the case with Ashlee Simpson's ill fated "performance" on Saturday Night Live on October 23, 2004, in which the truth of the matter unexpectedly came out.
For her second song, the cameras cut in and the band was playing the introduction. Then what was apparently Ms Simpson's pre-recorded vocal performance kicked in. The most obvious explanation would be that she simply missed her cue, cause she didn't even have the microphone near her mouth. Her arm and mic were hanging to one side.
That was it. Control cut the pre-recorded vocal after a few seconds, and the band went right on playing. Just play through the changes until it comes back around again on the guitar. She tried to gamely dance a few steps.
However, she was just done. She couldn't even TRY to sing after that, and just walked off the stage after a total of about one minute. The band played on for a few more bars and they cut to commercial.
At the end of the show, she was on with host Jude Law with some explanation about the band playing the wrong song. This didn't really make any sense. The band knew what they were playing.
The problem appears to be lack of talent. It's generally rated pretty weak when you're a singer and "perform" live by lip synching. But it's really and truly lame when you can't even manage to lip synch. Even Milli Va-frickin-nilli could lip synch. Maybe she could get the one who's managed not to kill himself to give her lessons.
In those closing seconds of Ms Simpson's career aka the SNL closing credits, all the girls on the cast went out of their way to come to her on camera and give all hugs and moral support. That was a nice show of solidarity.
Now the one song she did manage to play was just nothing, and she's not even capable of lip synching the second one. I see a short shelf life for this "artist."
