Harold Arlen centennial
Harold Arlen was born 100 years ago today, on February 15, 1905 in Buffalo, New York.
Harold Arlen seems rather underappreciated today. He doesn't get the ink that Cole Porter or George Gershwin does. There seems to be very little fuss even on this centennial of his birth.
However, look at this COMPLETE LIST OF HAROLD ARLEN SONGS from his official website. This sure looks like as impressive a catalogue as any American songwriter ever. For starters, he wrote the music for the Wizard of Oz, including "Over the Rainbow."
Besides that, he was probably the best user of the emerging blues idiom among any of the Broadway era writers. The Wizard of Oz material is great, but those who know might pick "One for My Baby" as his greatest song. Personally, "Blues in the Night" ranks as my fave Arlen song. Sinatra wouldn't quite have been Sinatra without those Arlen torch songs.
Perhaps during the course of the day, you may wish to dig out any old version of some of these high points of the Arlen catalogue.
