New Album Releases, 2-13-2006: Lucinda Williams and Renaissance man Sting
Best likely candidate in new releases this week is West by Lucinda Williams. Personally, I've never dug her quite as much as it seems like I should, but she's always worth hearing. She's got a producer here (Hal Wilner) noted for working with such as Marianne Faithful and Lou Reed, and as thus suggested moves apparently pretty far afield from her more typical country sound. At least a couple of these songs are inspired by the recent death of her mother, including "Fancy Funeral." For someone not particularly known as a commercial powerhouse, I note that this album is as high as #6 currently at Amazon.
 It gets a little thin past that, though. The next most likely item is Sting playing Renaissance lute music. Thus we get these arrangements of the music of John Dowland (1563-1626), who is known as the "melancholy madrigalist" in The Journey and the Labyrinth: The Music of John Dowland [includes DVD]. Oy. Can't wait for that Police tour.
For the newest in new, I note the web-release of a new joint from rightwing protest gadfly Dr BLT called "Playin' Politics" about the Dixie Chicks Grammy wins just a few hours ago. I don't know that it's destined to be any all time classic, but I do appreciate his specific point of lyrical contention, which is not against left wing politics, but against the dishonest or just stupid collapse of distinction between whatever flavor of politics or Important Social Message vs actual music and art.
I was particularly pleased to note that he actually cited specifically the correct pick that really was by rights the best record of 2006. DOWNLOAD "PLAYIN' POLITICS (WITH THE DIXIE CHICKS)"
