New CD Album Releases, 6-29-2010: Peter Case, Kenny G, Indigo Girls

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Peter CasePeter Case is one of the most underappreciated songwriters and musicians of his generation, which is starting to get some age on it. Brother Peter had heart surgery in 2009. His new album is Wig! You might fear that someone like Peter Case who is known primarily as a folkie troubador might inflict on us a set of Insightful Meditations on mortality or some such.

Thankfully, his actual answer was to put together a band and be glad to be able to get out and rock the bells with jammin’ little ditties like “Dig What You’re Putting Down” and the “House Rent Jump.” May God bless and preserve Peter Case.

I totally do not get the appeal of Kenny G. Why would someone listen to Kenny G when they could just as easily be busting out their eardrums with a sharp stick? But the dude’s supposedly moved some 75 MILLION albums. This week he has Heart and Soul. It is his 13th album.

Civility in Political Discourse

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

You really should try to be fair minded in debate, if your goal is to seek truth rather than merely to vent.  Plus, Jesus will like you better.

On the other hand, I do get most weary of folks bitching about the lack of civility or co-operation in modern American political debate.  At this point in history, the hand wringing about meaness in political debate seems largely to be a dishonest left wing ploy to stifle debate.

A classic recent example is the utterly bogus “Coffee Party.”   This group is nominally non-partisan, and emphasizes mostly the idea of civil discourse.  But by their name and in the context, the group is simply a very slightly clever rebuke to the Tea Party movement, implicitly painting them as mean old haters.  This is a pretty bogus attempt at discrediting and silencing actually generally very nice and politely stated dissent against the Obama administration’s power grabs.  Apparently we should just shut up and let the president and congress run hog wild without any substantive protest.

However, as a rightwing nutjob, perhaps I have a skewed view.   Some folks, perhaps including me, were sometimes less than nice in smacking back at opponents of Bush’s Iraq war effort.  Still, I don’t recall seeing any of these people who are wringing their hands over the mean tea partiers saying anything against danged peace pukes who were going on about BusHitler and Cheney being a Nazi.  Indeed, I suspect they were some of the same people.

In any case, I think that civility in political discourse is overrated.  It’s more important to say what needs to be said than it is to play nice.  Poor old W survived the ridiculous name calling, and Obama will doubtless survive the relatively mild criticism he has received.  As the saying goes, if you can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

These thoughts are sparked now by an excellent article in the Wall Street Journal about the generally considerably harsher political discourse amongst the founding fathers, particularly in the 1790s following the success of the Revolutionary War.  This is when the rubber really met the road in forming our government, after the British were gone and we were filling out the actual specific structure of a government.

Among other things, Thomas Paine was denouncing George Washington as a traitor, and there were folks retroactively accusing him of being a British collaborator during the war.  So if you feel a bit bad about people talking mean to each other, just know that our current rancor is mostly rather mild compared to the seriously vicious stuff that passed between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson allies in the day.

So bring the pain, all you doggone commie Obama lovers!

New CD Album Releases, 6-22-2010: Macy Gray, Miley Cyrus, Eminem
There’s a whole bunch of big name new releases this week, including a second album from Miley Cyrus, Keith Sweat, Uncle Kracker, Vince Neil, Mark Chesnutt, Herbie Hancock, Ozzy Osbourne and a promising sounding blues album from Cyndi Lauper in Memphis.

There’s a new album Recovery from Eminem. He’s now apparently happier and mellower, rapping about being sober. This sounds like a very interesting new approach for…zzzzzzzz.
Macy Gray
Okay, with that all done we can get to the really exciting part: Macy Gray is back with The Sellout, her fifth album. Woo hoo! Now, Rand knows that I’m just about her biggest fan, but still. Let me put it this way. Her four previous stellar albums would cause me to buy the album and give it a spin or two. But I’ve played this damned thing 15 or 20 times in the last four days. I ain’t playing nobody’s record that many times out of preconceived loyalty. This sucker’s pretty good.

Now, this record just came out, so it’ll take awhile to really shake out what to ultimately make of it. Ask me again six months or a year from now. I’m not sure at this point that there’s one song that totally colonizes my mind like the awesome record of the year “Ghetto Love” from her last album. But there are certainly at least several memorable songs here.

Pretty much every song here has at least some kind of halfway decent hook, but the lead single “Beauty in the World” is probably the most just overwhelmingly catchy. For something to have stuck in your mind, this is a particularly good sentiment to run your mind on. Really, in the sound and sentiment it is essentially a gospel song. Note the specific lyrical reference to the creator at the climax of the song.

Probably my favorite song on the album so far though is “That Man,” which gives a relentless midtempo funky dissertation on the budding thrill of her latest tingly man obsession.

This leads into the joyfully unhealthy stride of “Stalker.” She generally has one good psycho song per album, which is my favorite flavor of Macy. I’m not sure if this is quite up there with, say, “Give Me All Your Loving Or I Will Kill You,” but it’s pretty good. Naturally, Macy as the narrator is the cheerfully obsessed stalker.

This is followed by the basic r&b ballad “Real Love.”  It’s a pretty good song, but the best thing is that it’s a duet with Bobby Frickin’ Brown.  She starts out by calling him “sexual chocolate” and addressing him by name.  The willful perversity of this makes a pretty good song really, really funny.  I mean, you know, BOBBY BROWN.  This is the guy who (at least according to public perception) ruined the poor angel Whitney Houston.   Bobby Brown is basically this generation’s Ike Turner (or worse) – and the guy Macy Gray picks out for a big love duet.

May God bless and protect Macy Gray.

Elton John in Israel

Friday, June 18th, 2010

God bless Elton John. He’s a kind of fellow that doesn’t much care if he’s bucking the fasions of his class.
Sir Elton John
Most particularly, I’m glad to see that Sir Elton showed up to play in Israel after several other big names have recenly made a big point of publicly cancelling concerts there to protest, basically, the continued existence of Israel – or at least any Israeli act of self-defense, which pretty much amounts to the same thing. “We do not cherry-pick our consciences” retorted Sir Elton from an Israeli stage.

For my part, I appreciate this point because I was personally disappointed to see my hero Elvis Costello involved in such foolishness.

New CD Album Releases, 6-15-2010: Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Devo
Tom PettyThe main big time new album this week is Mojo from Tom Petty. It is his first official album with the Heartbreakers in a half dozen years. I note that he starts the album with a song about Sally Hemmings and Thomas Jefferson, the “Jefferson Jericho Blues.”

John Mellencamp is my Hoosier hometown hero, but I’m less than impressed with the outlook on this very damned expensive new 4 CD box set On the Rural Route 7609. For starters, $80 is a lot of damned money for four 25 cent CDs, even with fancy packaging.

Moreoever, the selection of songs doesn’t look very satisfying. He’s adding a few little songwriting demos and such nuggets with a few outtakes, a few new songs apparently and and, oh yeah, some of the hits. But not all of the good stuff. He’s putting on a lot of mediocre or worse newer stuff with stupid ass social messages that make it art. Plus, he specifically gets docked a couple of points for the absolutely ludicrously pretentious point of having the ridiculous vaudeville shuffling academic demagogue Dr Cornell West reading his ridiculous lyrics to the mediocre song “Jim Crow.” Meanwhile, for $80 on four CDs he couldn’t find room for “Get a Leg Up” or “Paper in Fire” or “Paper in Fire” or “Lonely Ol’ Night.”

BlackJack 1998-2010: All Dogs Go To Heaven

Monday, June 14th, 2010

I beg indulgence of kind readers as we pause briefly to memorialize a family dog. Some few days after springing my best pal from a stint in time out in 1998, one of the first things he did was to get him a dog. BlackJack, commonly known as Jack was a barely weaned North American Staffordshire PitBull Terrier.

Jack was a very good boy, probably in large part because Daddy trained him carefully and kept him right by his side – his best pal and companion for a dozen years. This pitbull thought he was a lap dog. He liked to give Daddy sloppy kisses and jump up in his lap, a 50-year-old boy and his dog.

Jack was very good, and never bit a person. Granted, there were a couple of stray cats in the neighborhood who met bad ends. But besides the fact that you can’t really fault a pit bull for killing a stray cat, you might also look at it as a public service on Jack’s part. Anyway, he was good with people and particularly children. There’s a five year old (and his sentimental mother) who are especially mourning his passing over the weekend.

Figuring him for 12 years, and dog years being generally figured as 7 to 1, Jack would have been something like 84 in people years. He had a good long puppy life. He provided and generated a lot of love in his years.

Poor fella wasted away in his last couple of weeks before he passed. At least he didn’t seem to be in pain. Plus to the good, that gave some of his people last chances to dote on him. Niecely bought him chicken fettucini from Fazoli’s to hand feed him. I’m sure that Jack knew as good as a puppy could that he was well loved.

New CD Album Releases, 6-8-2010: Christina Aguilera, Jewel, Twilight Saga Soundtrack
Jewel Kilcher is hotJewel seems like a nice enough girl, and she’s certainly awfully cute. But she’s utterly bland and mediocre as a musician. She’s had about ONE moderately memorable ie catchy song ever, “Who Will Save Your Soul?” From there, it’s just album after album of floundering around looking for a personality. She hasn’t found one yet.

At the moment, she’s a “country” singer. That might work out for her, though this new Sweet and Wild seems to be even more watered down for being “country” than her last album. Might be just the thing to make her a big hit at unlistenable modern commercial country music radio. She could be the new Dixie Chicks, if she can avoid imploding with obnoxious self-destructive Natalie Maines nonsense. I’m sure she looks really good on CMT.

Bionic is the fourth studio album from Christina Aguilera. She kinda tends to do stuff musically and personally to get herself lumped in with dumbass Stupid Spoiled Whores like Britney Spears. But it has dawned on me over time that she actually can sing. She can actually share a mic with Tony Bennett and not look stupid, so she is not completely lacking talent. I’m pretty much not the target market for this electro-pop, aimed for modern commercial radio and competing against the likes of Lady Ga-Ga and such. I’ve heard worse.

New CD Album Releases, 6-1-2010: Clay Aiken, Jack Johnson
Former professional surfer Jack Johnson is back this week with his fifth album of laid back dudeness, To the Sea. Sounds pleasant enough from this bits I’m hearing, but I’m not particularly hearing anything that really grabs me. This is what I’d say about his entire career, so I guess it’s par for the course. I’d probably rather listen to him than Jimmy Buffett, I’d guess. So take it that way for your summer lua listening.

Clay Aiken is back for more idolizing with his To the Sea. He seems to be basically a way watered down Barry Manilow. Uh, that’s not good. At least Manilow wrote some competent mediocre songs. Aiken doesn’t have even that. I’m utterly perplexed why anyone ever thought this guy was anybody. I mean, I’m sure he’s a real nice guy and all, but I have trouble imagining why anyone besides his mother would be interested in listening to him sing.

Plus, this is worse than that. It’s purely random, as he does them, soft rock covers. It’s not just that he’s not really adding anything, but that the world is a little lesser place for hearing his awful cocktail lounge desecration of Conway Twitty’s classic “It’s Only Make Believe.” Plus, someone should seriously go upside his head for defiling “Suspicious Minds” with his utter mediocrity. Seriously now, who’s buying this nonsense?
