New CD Album Releases, 11-30-2010: Black Eyed Peas, Flo Rida, Dinah Washington

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Dinah WashingtonThe Black Eyed Peas are one of the biggest bunches of nothing ever massively sold to the “music” buying public. They are pretty near to utterly devoid of any kind of musical talent. On the other hand, apparently some 11 million people spent money on their last pile of nothing. Oh yes, they are definitely Enemies of the People.

I guess you can’t hold it entirely against them for making crappy records when millions of people are anxious to hand them piles of money. But I will 100% hold it against the record buying public. If you’ve ever spent money on a damned Black Eyed Peas record, you are probably pretty much an idiot who wouldn’t know an actual SONG if it came up and bit your buttocks. Not to put too fine a point on it, but what’s wrong with you window lickers? Do they let you vote? No wonder the country’s so messed up.

Their new pile of nothingness is called The Beginning. Presumably, that would be the beginning of nausea. Their nearest approach here to an “idea” is an utterly unimaginative dance remix of the crappy Jennifer Warnes “Time of My Life” song. I mean, this is the lead single – their best shot. If you can imagine, it somehow goes downhill from there.

By the way, if there’s anybody out there in internet web land interested in actual MUSIC, there’s a very promising sounding Dinah Washington box set, The Fabulous Miss D! The Keynote, Decca and Mercury Singles 1943-1953. That’d be 107 chronologically arranged songs on four CDs. This was before albums, and before 45s. 102 of these were Mercury label 78s, and this represents the bulk of her short career.

New CD Album Releases, 11-23-2010: Kanye West, My Chemical Romance, The Beatles

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Kanye WestKanye West has My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. This sounds like more of the same, which is to say there might be one or two worthwhile songs amidst all the usual incredibly cheesy self-aggrandizement. The big lead song power displays the natural drama that does work very much in the favor of his best songs. I’m not sure if this is one of them, but I will give him some credit for sampling King Crimson.

The Beatles have a four disc set combining the 1962-66 and the 1967-70 sets. But the big news is that they have finally released the catalogue digitally via the Apple iTunes service. Early indications are that they sold some 450,000 full length albums and two million additional individual tracks in their first week, notably making the Abbey Road recording of “Here Comes the Sun” the #6 seller of everything this week on iTunes.

New CD Album Releases 11-16-2010: Bruce Springsteen, Kid Rock, Keith Urban

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

young Bruce SpringsteenThe big thing this week has to be The Promise from Bruce Springsteen. This is a 21 song two CD set of songs from the early sessions after Born to Run that eventually became Darkness on the Edge of Town. It contains maybe three otherwise released songs, including a version of “Because the Night” that frankly sounds pale compared the hit Patti Smyth hit.

I have to think that I’m missing something, but this stuff pretty much sounds like nothing to me. I keep thinking that this is stuff he made between his two best albums, right when he’s at prime heat. Yet for all that, there’s nothing new I’m hearing here that’s memorable. Hey, maybe there’s a reason he didn’t put this out for 35 years.

Keith Urban’s new Get Closer consists of a mere eight songs. This may sound like too few, but it’s probably a public safety concern. If someone had to listen to more than eight of these songs together, officials fear that it might make some sensitive individuals suicidal. The guy should certainly be beaten for putting out such bland MOR crap and calling it “country” music. This album is #4 currently at Amazon. Who’s buying this crap? And with this many records, why can’t he buy a couple of decent songs? Also, why can’t he afford a shave or at least a clean pair of jeans and at least a nice clean plain white t-shirt? This guy could use a little visit to Camp Mimi.

Kid Rock has a new album called Born Free. Apparently Kid Rock is becoming more mature and reflective with age. I’m to understand that he thinks he’s Bob Seger now, particularly of the reflective ballad type. Hmm, let’s see. Do I listen to an album of Kid Rock writing meditative ballads reflecting his growing maturity, or blow my brains out with a shotgun? Tough decision.

Charlie Rangel, Drama Queen

Monday, November 15th, 2010

I know it’s generally considered bad form and schaudenfreude and whatnot, but I’m enjoying this Charlie Rangel ethics committee hearing drama. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving schmuck – give or take Barney Frank.

Rangel made this big drama queen plea that he’s supposedly being denied the right to counsel in these hearings. This has been going on for two years, and he’s complaining now that it’s a rush to judgment and he isn’t being given a fair chance. He’s out millions of dollars in lawyers, and had to let them go because he can’t pay them and hasn’t had time to create a legal defense fund to help him raise another million dollars to pay for his legal defense for a two day or so ethics hearing. (Would this really cost a million dollars?)

So then, since the poor fellow is being railroaded, the only thing to do was to walk out in protest. He’s a poor, downtrodden victim, I tell ya. Gee, I might almost be sympathetic if he wasn’t one of the most powerful congressman as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and if he weren’t in trouble for millions of dollars in funny money sideways, forwards and backwards.

Obviously the guy has money, and powerful friends with money. It’s utterly laughable to claim that he can’t conjure up legal representation. It’s an even funnier point to consider that his Harlem constituents just re-elected him and probably will buy this argument.

The obvious point to take from this walkout is that it’s Rangel essentially admitting that he’s screwed. He thought he could do pretty much anything cause he’s chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. But he went way overboard in his hubris, and now he’s screwed. Too bad, so sad.

Rebecca Sink-Burris and Indiana Libertarians Step Up Their Game

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

With apologies for late delivery, I just want to give a quick shout out to my pals in the Indiana Libertarian Party for their 2010 election returns. I’ve got some issues with the national movement, let us say, and I’m basically alumni rather than actively involved at this point but I’m definitely proud of our local people.

Most particularly, I’m right proud of my old buddy, the articulate and vivacious Rebecca Sink-Burris. She nabbed 5% running for US Senate against Dan Coats. That’s a fairly impressive showing for a third party candidate in a major statewide race. It’s about 4X better than I did running for the same seat last time it was up.

Plus, congratulations are in order for Cheryl Heacox who actually won a seat on the Clay Township Advisory Board in Wayne County.

Then there’s ever-lovin’ Rex Bell, who got 21% in a three way race for a state house seat. He campaigns hard and has gotten pretty good vote totals in other races. Ol’ boy’s going to fool around and end up in the legislature or something. Maybe we’ll send him to DC. The Honorable Representative Rex Bell. I like the sound of that.

I know from years of experience what kind of blood, sweat and tears these people put into trying to drag the country back toward legitimate constitutional governance. Good on ya, mates. XOX

New CD Album Releases, 11-9-2010: Jonathan Richman, Reba McEntire, Quincy Jones, Charlie Louvin, Susan Boyle, Cee-Lo Green, James Blunt

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Jonathan Richman and Tommy LarkinsGood old Jonathan Richman has put out something worth actually spending money on this week, O Moon, Queen of Night On Earth. His early work from the 70s was excellent, but he’s about as good or arguably better now. He’s more mature emotionally and considerably more subtle and sophisticated musically. Imagine if Buddy Holly had made it to 60, and still had his creative spark. That’d put you in the general range of this excellent work.

I’m a little ashamed to admit that I didn’t even think that Charlie Louvin was even still alive, but the Louvin brother has a new album this week, The Battles Rage On. Just from previews, this actually sounds like it would be worth listening to. God bless and preserve the Louvin Brothers.

The Tea Party Whips A$$, James Watt Republicans and the Rise of the Aqua Buddha

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Boo-ya! The Republicans – particularly the Tea Partying ones – put a hurt on the Democrats in the 2010 elections yesterday. They teabagged a whole bunch of badly deserving Democrats. They won back the US House, and picked up control of 19 state legislative bodies, and a bunch of governor’s seats.

The Republicans also managed to improve their statistics and appearances for electing minority groups of all varieties. Reagan Interior Secretary James Watts (may God bless and protect him) once famously facetiously bragged on having a government board with “a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple.” This year, the Republicans have done considerably better than that in multiple ethnic groups.

For starters, they elected two new black Republican members to the US House of Representatives. Allen West is the first black man elected to congress from Florida since the Reconstruction. Tim West in South Carolina beat Strom Thurmond’s son, again the first black congressman from that state since Reconstruction.

The Republicans did especially well in upping their Hispanic contingent. THE big star of the whole election is the newly elected Cuban-American Republican US Senator from Florida, Marco Rubio. This guy could be president one day. He’s young and good looking and articulate, and he’s putting the fear of Yhwh into some Democrats. Also, Brian Sandoval beat Harry Reid’s boy to become governor of Nevada. Plus, Susana Martinez will be the governor of New Mexico. On top of which, there are several new Republican congressmen of Hispanic backgrounds.

One of the top couple of new Republicans who specifically owe Sarah Palin for her critical support is Nikki Haley, the newly elected Indian-American governor of South Carolina. Along with good ol’ Bobby Jindal in Louisiana, that makes two Indian-American Republican governors.

Perhaps best of all, we just elected our first ever Buddhist to the US Senate – from Kentucky of all places. Of course, Rand Paul has to SAY that he’s a plain vanilla Christian. He can’t admit to being a Buddhist, any more than Obama can admit to being Muslim. But we know The Truth. THIS has to be the greatest campaign ad of the 2010 season. Remember though that this ad was supposed to make you want to vote AGAINST him. Rand Paul is apparently in fact a high officer of the mystical Aqua Buddhist sect.

Christine O’Donnell’s loss in the Delaware US Senate race unfortunately denied us the opportunity for our first Wiccan senator (if you don’t count Hillary). It seems that the people of Delaware couldn’t overcome their bigotry against Earth religions. Maybe next time.

But still, it was an exceptional showing. So in celebration of this historic Republican victory, let us borrow a little classic Cheap Trick tribal dance chant “Who D King?” Note Rand Paul in the back, leading the stoners Buddhist chant.
Who d king of the whole wide world?
WE d king of the whole
Buuuuu-dha – buddha, budha

All hail Aqua Buddha!

New CD Album Releases, 11-2-2010: Elvis Costello, Neil Diamond

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Elvis CostelloThe big enchilada this week is National Ransom from Elvis Costello. It features the presence of T-Bone Burnett and most of the same players from the Sugarcane record. I’m sorry, but this is just utter mediocrity. You can hear where he’s put in the effort in the compositions and the arrangements, but to little avail. There’s very little of interest. I’ve basically forced myself to listen to this a half dozen times, and there’s just really not a memorable composition in the batch. I am THE original EC fan, and if he can’t sell me on the record, that should tell you something.

If you’re new to Elvis Costello, start at the beginning for the first few albums, with My Aim Is True. If you’re a part time Elvis fan looking for something in more recent end, he made an album worthy of his name ie excellent as recently as The Delivery Man in 2004.
