New CD Album Releases, 3-29-2011: Snoop Dogg, Radiohead, Britney Spears, Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Snoop DoggRadiohead are back this week with The King of Limbs, which is the #2 seller currently at Amazon. Sometimes they try to write actual songs, which makes for some good work. Sometimes they are more after Pink Floyd atmospherics, which seems to be more the case here. Lots of involved instrumental loops and layers of whatnot, but is there a hook or a real melody under any of of this?

Snoop Dogg is back with what is credited as his 11th album, Doggumentary. Haven’t heard the whole thing, but the samples present some agreeable grooves. There’s also a really cute duet with Willie Nelson about not being “Superman.” It’s worth a listen for that song alone.

Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis team up for their second Blue Note album, this time a live Lincoln Center tribute to Ray Charles. Half the songs feature Norah Jones. These people are all nice and all. They play and sing real good, and the idea of this superstar lineup sounds cool and all. It would be cool to have been there and see this show. But I don’t see why anyone would really listen to an album like this when they could just as easily be listening to Ray.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton 1967 Taming of the Shrew Pictures

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

On the occasion of Liz Taylor’s passing, I’ve been working up some image galleries for her 1967 film Taming of the Shrew, starring as the titular shrew Katherina opposite Richard Burton as manly Petruchio.

Al Barger blames the gov’ment

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

So I’m sitting in my cubicle dialing the phone and bitching to my neighbor about the dad blame gov’ment. This inspired a young co-worker to a little caricature. I think Brother Cody caught my spirit quite well. Notice how my spirited response in the second frame blows my co-worker back against his chair.

Al Barger sez the gov'ment caused everything!

PS Like I was saying, the gov’ment did in fact cause everything. I blame them.

New CD Album Releases, 3-22-2011: Duran Duran, Jennifer Hudson

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

All You Need Is Now is the lucky 13th studio album from Duran Duran. It features the four original members, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Nick Rhodes and Simon Le Bon. I’m at least a middling Duran fan. They’re not the deepest and most profound music of their generation, but you really have to respect their serious professional pop songwriting, arranging and record making skills. However, I haven’t heard a note of this new album, so I can’t say anything for it one way or another.

New CD Album Releases, 3-15-2011: Steve Martin, Bob Geldof, Al Di Meola, New York Dolls

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Steve Martin playing banjoSteve Martin is back for a second album of banjo based original songs, Rare Bird Alert – crediting the band as the Steep Canyon Rangers. His Crow album was perhaps the best album of 2010. He gets some extra love for the title “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs.” He also reaches back for a banjo arrangement of “King Tut.” This loses the somewhat stiff Egyptian premise of the original arrangment for something with more groove. These two albums are some of the best work of anything in Mr. Martin’s illustrious and multi-formatted career.

After years of playing St. Bob of LiveAid, Most Holy Moral Authority negotiating with world leaders and such, Bob Geldof has apparently played that string out and been reduced back to his dayjob as a pop singer. I’d like to hate on him some more, but I must say that the little bits of his new How to Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell album that I’ve heard sound promising.

Adrian Monk Notes and Trudy Monk Picture Galleries

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Ol’ Al spent a good part of this fall and winter obsessing over Adrian Monk. Indeed, I’ve written individual commentaries for all 125 episodes of the series. Among other things, I’m really fascinated by how much of Monk’ squirrelly and often abusive behavior might be considered “can’t help it” vs how much of it is Monk indulging his inner schmuck.

Then there’s the whole idea of Trudy Monk. Much of the underlying dynamics of the show are built on his loss and frustration over being unable to solve his wife’s murder from four years before the timeline of the series. She shows up in photos, in conversations, in flashbacks and numerous pure fantasies and hallucinations – and finally in a crucial videotape in the series finale.

So I have pulled several hundred images of Trudy Monk as played by three different actresses in the series, Stellina Rusich, Lindy Newton and (mostly) Melora Hardin. Enjoy.

“Swingali” – Harpo Marx At the Circus

Monday, March 14th, 2011

I’ve been digging on the 1939 Marx Brothers movie At the Circus. It has recently given me some fair delight, in part based on five original songs by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg. This was the same year they wrote the Wizard of Oz songs. Nothing here will make you forget “Over the Frickin’ Rainbow”. However this does introduce Groucho’s best and best known song, “Lydia the Tatooed Lady”.

It also features a hot jam nominally by a band of young black kids who have declared Harpo “Swingali” because he tamed a cage of mad lions with a trombone lullabye. The adults join in. Harpo parties with the black folk and digs their song, then they put Swingali behind his harp to play variations on Rodgers and Hart’s “Blue Moon.”

Checking out reviews for the movie from IMDB, it turns out this segment is horribly racist, wouldn’t you know! Actually, I can hardly think of ANY form of movie appearance with black folk before, oh maybe Sidney Poitier, that is not routinely villified as racist. It’s kinda like some folks are more interested in establishing their Moral Superiority than in digging good music and film. Whatever works for them.

I suggest watching the movie. The Marx Brothers are good for your soul. Also, dig this response to these hateful critics, and these photo galleries of the segment:

New CD Album Releases, 3-8-2011: REM, Avril Lavigne, Neil Diamond Re-issue

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Collapse into Now is by best count REM‘s 5347th album of same-old, same-old. What I’m hearing sounds like every other REM record ever, except that some of the early ones had memorable hooks. Don’t think they’ve conjured up anything that would fit that description in 15 years or more. But hey, there are still people who buy new Dylan albums for whatever reason, and then talk themselves into believing that they’re actually good. Whatever works for you.

Also, Avril Lavigne has Goodbye Lullaby. Poor thing is going through her first divorce from the Sum 41 guy. I’m sure that the album contains some very meaningful meditations on being a divorced pop star.

Charlie Rangel sticks up for crack dealing gangster

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

I love (almost) everybody (except for beady eyed Canadians, of course). Like Granny Clampett used to sing, I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart. I’m all in favor of old folks and babies, black folk, yellow, red, swarthy and lilly white.

Still I am but a human mammal, and try as I might to be positive, having any kind of basis of taking reality into account makes me think bad things from time to time. Damn that pattern recognition. Sometimes, for example, I can’t help thinking bad things about the black community. Your mayor has been in prison after being on video smoking crack with a whore in a hotel? We don’t care. We’ll re-elect you anyway. Football star brutally murders two people? It’s all good baby.

I saw another one of those things today that makes me think things that nice Al doesn’t want to think. This would be a report on a court hearing for an Afrika Owes. On the one hand, the 17 year old girl has straight A’s in school, which is great. On the other hand, she’s apparently also an active member of a big gun wielding and using drug gang. This is, of course, subject to a trial by jury to establish guilt.

Now that’s not particularly a reflection on any group in itself. Lot of individual white kids and others do bad things as well. But this is being treated as some kind of civil rights thing, with no less than congress critter Charlie Rangel showing up in court to show his support, and indeed apparently going on a bit of a media crusade. Apparently having good grades should somehow cancel out being part of a violent drug gang. I’ll just say that my congressman Mike Pence would not be showing up in court as a sob sister for someone who’s a soldier for a violent gang of crack dealers. Nor would any of our local churches be offering bail money to spring such a person who is involved in a gang causing terrible damage and mayhem in their community.

Here’s some of the nut of this story:

Rep. Rangel Causes Stir In Courtroom, Gets Reprimanded By Judge
Congressman Chastised For Constantly Interrupting Hearing
March 4, 2011 11:00 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Congressman Charles Rangel caused a stir in court Friday while trying to lend his support for bail of Afrika Owes.

Owes, 17, had been a student at the prestigious Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. Prosecutors say she was also a member of a drug gang that terrorized 137th Street in Harlem.

Owes was one of fourteen suspected “137th Street Crew” gang members arrested last month. Prosecutors said the gang used shootings, beatings and robberies to protect their turf and gain street status on a stretch of West 137th Street. The gang allegedly openly dealt crack in apartment lobbies, near Harlem Hospital and near the Abyssinian Baptist Church.

The judge refused to release Owes on her own recognizance, saying tapes from Rikers Island have her involved in running guns and getting orders to “shoot for the head.”

The Abyssinian Baptist Church, which is located on 137th street, offered to post bond but the judge said it wasn’t clear if that was legally allowed.

WCBS 880′s Irene Cornell reports Rangel caused a stir in the courtroom, repeatedly standing up and interrupting the judge.

“All the discussions on the question of public policy boils down to a 17-year-old arrested student remaining in jail,” Rangel said.

From any normal standpoint, the fact that Miss Afrika has excellent grades makes her WORSE, not better. She’s got pretty much no defense of being trapped with no other way out. Plus, being a violent felon with a big brain only makes her more dangerous to society – and particularly the black community on which they primarily prey.

Now, I’m sure that not all black folks support this kind of foolishness, but it’s pretty damned ridiculous that enough do for CHURCHES to be doing it and for it to be a good move for a politician representing that community to be acting like this. So I will carefully narrow it down to addressing the members of the Abyssinian Baptist Church, Owes supporters in that courtroom and the constituents who keep electing the likes of Charlie Rangel: What the hell is wrong with you people? Where is north on your moral compass?

How is anyone supposed to clean up ghettoes and rough neighborhoods so that they will be safe for decent folk of all backgrounds when big chunks of the community run interference like this for the worst actors?

New CD Album Releases, 3-1-2011: Lucinda Williams, Beady Eye, Marianne Faithfull

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

sexy Lucinda WilliamsBeady Eye is Oasis minus Noel Gallagher. They have an album Different Gear, Still Speeding. The previews of this sound to me pretty much exactly like typical Oasis, ie utterly indistinguished stylistic throwbacks without a hook in sight. The crew came up with one good “Wonderwall” a decade and a bunch of albums or so ago. It’s long past time for these one-hit wonders to go to pumping gas or just living on the beach if they’re so rich.

Lucinda Williams has Blessed this week. I have to confess that I’ve generally liked the idea of Lucinda Williams a lot more than any of her actual records. Plus, I really like that slightly gin-soaked voice. She’s an expressive singer with a good instrument and just enough hint of hard living roughness to give it character.

Generally though, I just can’t remember much of any of her compositions. A great voice doesn’t do you much good if you don’t have something worthwhile to sing. I’ll say tentatively that this Blessed album is something of a step up for her song-wise. That is to say, I don’t know if this is a great record, but I’m at least hearing a few decent hooks. That’ll rate it more careful listening.
sexy mature Marianne Faithfull
Horses and High Heels counts as Marianne Faithfull‘s 23rd album. It was recorded last year in the French Quarter of New Orleans. You might not expect much for someone best known publicly as Mick Jagger’s hard living old girlfriend. Indeed, it would seem like a wonder that she’d still be alive let alone able to carry a tune. But since she proved herself artistically with the classic Broken English album in 1979, she’s become an even better singer. Two thirds of this new album are covers – but they’re obscure enough covers that as much of a pop music connisseur as me doesn’t recognize them. That probably makes them all new songs to you. Haven’t had a chance to hear this yet, but it sure sounds promising.
