New CD Album Releases, 6-7-2011: The Book of Mormon soundtrack is AWESOME!!!

June 7th, 2011

This week marks the release of the very likely best album of the year (give or take Paul Simon), the soundtrack to Trey Parker and Matt Stones Broadway smash hit The Book of Mormon. It won 9 Tony awards, including Best Musical. This is SO worth spending your money on. With due respect to their previous work, this is many times more musically ambitious than anything they’ve done before. Nearly every single song is a new Broadway classic. Naomi Campbell vs “Racist” Cadbury ad

June 4th, 2011

Naomi Campbell had her itty bitty diva feelings hurt by an ad for Cadbury chocolate bars. “Move over, Naomi. There’s a new diva in town.”

“I am shocked. It’s upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people,” she said, according to the Independent. “I do not find any humor in this. It is insulting and hurtful.”

While Ms. Campbell and her opportunistic backers have their panties all up in a bunch about this horrible defamation of being compared to a chocolate bar, I presume they will be working to get repentance and atonement from the wicked racist George Clinton for the infamous song “Chocolate City.”

How many kinds of dishonest and despicable is Naomi Campbell? Being compared to chocolate has pretty much always been regarded as a NICE thing to say about a black person, particularly a black woman. Chocolate is good. It’s the tastiest thing ever. It’s completely arbitrary to decide to be offended by it.

Plus, she wasn’t being compared on the basis of her being like chocolate. The point and the joke was that the chocolate was a fancy thing that demanded pampering and special consideration. It’s not that she’s chocolate, but that the chocolate is a diva.

She has more than earned the term diva. Indeed that term is WAY too generous for her. Naomi Campbell goes way past being stuck up. She has historically been known to be a violent bully. She’ll assault the help if she can’t find her favorite jeans or whatever such nonsense happens to irritate her. Intimidating a candy maker because she didn’t like being even ever-so-gently teased is par for the course for her – and an insult to people who have experienced actual racism.

Some chocolate lovers league should protest against chocolate being slandered by comparison to this worthless witch.

Al Barger’s Crusade for Moorish Dignity

June 4th, 2011

AL BARGER’S CRUSADE FOR MOORISH DIGNITY
For some years now, I’ve had something of a continuing grievance with people hating on seemingly almost every form of appearance of black people in any film before approximately Sidney Poitier. They’re all racist, or racially problematic, stereotypical, blah, blah, blah. [By the way, what exactly is the difference between a stereotype (bad) vs an archetype(good)?]

Shut up already, damn! Seems like there’s no winning. My beef with early Hollywood would be mostly that there were so few black folks. So I’m inclined to be grateful and cherish what there was that was any good. Whereas there are folk who seem to as much as actually make a living at throwing poo on the work of black actors and singers and any white folks who had the temerity to make films with them.

You COULD reasonably be offended by a lot of things. I can appreciate how just the stage name Stepin Fetchit would set progressive teeth on edge. Being a racially insensitive hillbilly, I can watch such a thing with impunity. Still, I get the point.

But then there’s bunches and bunches of looking to take everything in the worst way possible. Some folks badly WANT to be offended. They get off on feelings of righteous victimization or whatever. They CHOOSE to be offended or, worse, decide that their feelings are hurt over pretty much anything or nothing. I’m just saying that you’ve really got to REACH to get racism out of Harpo Marx swinging with the black folk At the Circus

If you really want bad depictions of black folk to bitch about, there’s MUCH worse stuff now. I utterly fail to see how you can reasonably be offended by Amos and Andy or the dreaded Stepin Fetchit, but think that these nasty Negro rap minstrel shows are somehow acceptable. James Baskett playing the part of kindly ex-slave Uncle Remus telling Br’er Rabbit stories in Song of the South is so horribly degrading that Disney won’t even make the movie available in the US. But Dre carrying on about bitches and hos and popping caps in niggers asses is groovy.

Looks to me like this would be exponentially more degrading and offensive than the worst early Hollywood depictions of blacks. OK, so Stepin Fetchit is not particularly an uplifting portrayal of black folk – if you took it that this was supposed to be what blacks are really like. But then as a white man, I would be offended by the portrayal of white men as fat and stupid as represented by, say, Laurel and Hardy. But both of these are just goofy light humor. The gangsterism of NWA and a thousand other thug rappers is truly depraved – and represented without the distance of fiction.

So I’m herewith declaring my own one man Crusade for Moorish Dignity in defense of black folk in early cinema, supposedly “racist” or not – and opposing cheap bogus claims of racism in general.

“Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.” Titus 1:5

John Edwards – World Class Schmuck and Thought Criminal

June 3rd, 2011

John Edwards was indicted today in a federal court for multiple campaign law violation felonies that could theoretically result in 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines. A couple of wealthy backers gave him nearly a million dollars to support his mistress and out of wedlock child. The premise of the criminal indictments is that all of this should have been treated as campaign donations, reported and regulated as such.

I hate John Edwards more than almost anyone else in recent American political life. He’s a nasty and narcisstic piece of work. As a trial attorney, he’s a great symbol for the abuses of tort law that are a considerable part of our health care problem in America. He’s a two-bit lying demagogue of the first order.

Nonetheless, I have to say that this indictment looks pretty bogus. This money was not used for campaign ads or consultants or anything clearly and undeniably to do with his 2008 campaign for president. The indictment completely depends on what he was thinking when he took and spent the money – which makes it basically that he’s being indicted for a thought crime. If he was taking that money from his friends to spend on his mistress in order to protect his viability as a candidate for POTUS, then he’s a felon who should go to prison. But if it was for other reasons, then the law simply doesn’t apply.

Edwards could just as easily say – and no doubt will in court – that he was doing this to spare his late wife, who was dying of cancer at the time, from public humiliation and so forth. I wouldn’t really believe that, but there’s no reasonable way that you could say for sure what’s in a man’s mind. Even a rabid rightwing nutjob like me could never convict him on this, being sure beyond a reasonable doubt as to his motives. It’s one thing as a couch pundit to say you don’t believe him. It’s another thing to be a jurist deciding a man’s fate.

John Edwards is a world class schmuck, deserving of any ridicule you can conjure up. But that in itself is not a felony.

New CD Album Releases, 5-31-2011: Eddie Vedder, Jordan Knight, Death Cab for Cutie

May 31st, 2011

Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam has a new album Ukulele Songs. It’s just that – Eddie Vedder and a ukelele. I suppose it’s mildly interesting as a novelty, but I’m not hearing much in the way of SONGS in this, but for a couple of covers. Vedder’s hero Pete Townshend did a song or two with ukelele, so what the hell. I’m all in favor of ukeleles and pretty much any unusual instrumental cover, but Vedder’s using JUST the ukelele. On one hand, he does have a strong voice which is emphasized in this, but it makes for very thin arrangement. I might care more about that if it involved more memorable songs.

Also, there’s a new record from Jordan Knight. He’s notable as the lead singer for New Kids On The Block, which in fairness have been about the longest last boy band ever or something. The samples I’m hearing here sound like utterly contrived modern commercial radio fodder, except that they absolutely lack any hooks. Maybe this would do you some nostalgic good if you’re a girl who use to get funny feelings down there when you were 10 years old and listening to NKOTB. Otherwise, I completely don’t see the point.

New CD Album Releases, 5-24-2011: Lady Gaga, Brad Paisley

May 24th, 2011

I don’t know what’s wrong with people. Sales of music have fallen in half over the last dozen years or so – and the most popular thing that they actually do spend music money on is a tired, homely and utterly talentless whore like Lady Gaga. I can’t even be bothered to make fun of her. She has a new album this week.

Then there’s a new Brad Paisley album. I think he’s supposed to be a “country” singer. I know I’ve heard a few of his songs, but damned if I can remember any of them. Don’t know why anyone would need to fool with stuff like this when they’re still making Hank Williams and Tom T Hall albums.

Ron Paul is a damned fool, example Bin Laden

May 12th, 2011

On May 10, 2011, Rep Ron Paul told radio talk show host Simon Conway that as president he would not have ordered the killing of Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan as President Obama did.

I would not vote for Ron Paul for dogcatcher, cause the man’s a fool. In the theory, I agree with most of the political principles that Ron Paul nominally espouses, but surely not in anything to do with foreign policy.

One of the basic problems with Ron Paul is simply that he’s a pure ideologue. He gets some idea of a principle in his mind, and will follow it all the way over the cliff with absolutely no regard to actual reality. We all tend to shoehorn the world to make it fit our mental paradigms, and the more ideologically committed we are the worse we do it.

Here, Ron Paul is so adamant to apply his ideas of international law and whatnot that de facto he would have let Bin Laden go. Why, he would have gone to the Pakis and had them arrest him and we could have had a trial. “What’s wrong with that?” Paul asked. “Why can’t we work with the government?”

Seriously, there are people who think this guy should be President of the United States with no better judgment than that. Alright then, congressman, let me answer your question briefly. We couldn’t work with the Pakistan government because they were obviously hiding this guy for some years. If we told the Paki government that we knew where he was, they would have tipped him and moved him somewhere else.

Also, what kind of ideological supposedly “libertarian” nonsense makes you think that Bin Laden had a trial coming to him? He openly declared war on the US and proceeded to mastermind and cheerlead the massacres of thousands of our people. What incorrect philosophical or ethical principle makes you think that such a person should expect anything other than to be hunted down and shot in the head?

And exactly what kind of trial was he supposed to get, and from whom? Does the honorable congressman really think that Bin Laden should have been brought to New York and gone to court? Really? How could that have possibly actually, really worked?

Jumpin’ Jebus on a pogo stick, Ron Paul has less sense than Barack Obama. Even the worst cheesy anti-American Marxist college professor we could find to make POTUS has more sense than this guy.

I so wish Ron Paul would just go away. There are plenty of people to make good libertarian and Tea Party arguments. This guy just gives all us rightwing libertarian nutjobs a bad name.

New CD Album Releases, 5-10-2011: Peter Case, The Cars, Randy Newman

May 10th, 2011

Peter CaseIt’s always good to have a new Peter Case album. This week Brother Peter has The Case Files on Alive Records. Haven’t heard enough to make any big judgment, though “Let’s Turn This Think Around” and “Kokomo Prayer Vigil” are sounding good. Note that Amazon is giving away the last song, “Round Trip Stranger Blues.”

The Cars are back with Ric Ocasek. Move Like This sounds exactly like the Cars, except without all those pesky hooks like the old days.

The Randy Newman Songbook, Vol 2 features Randy Newman doing basic stripped down piano and voice arrangements of his old songs, mostly not his better known songs even among his fan base. The original records were mostly pretty good, certainly not over produced. But then it’s good to just hear slightly different arrangements and performances of “My Life Is Good” and “Kingfish” among others, and it could draw you in to some lesser known classics.

New CD Album Releases, 5-3-2011: Beastie Boys, Stevie Nicks

May 3rd, 2011

Your best bet for putting a little fresh spice in your life this week is Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2. It is the eighth album from the Beastie Boys. What I’ve heard sounds a lot better than that awful tuneless 5 Burroughs album.

In Your Dreams is Stevie Nicks first album in ten years. She co-wrote most of the songs with producer Dave Stewart. Instead of the horse on the cover, she probably should have gone all the way with the fantasy element and made it a unicorn.

Looking forward to…

Atlas Shrugged Part 1 Movie Review

May 2nd, 2011

REVIEW NOTES ON THE MOVIE ATLAS SHRUGGED PART 1

Ol’ Al Barger for one says that the Atlas Shrugged Part 1 movie of Ayn Rand‘s classic novel is quite good – a lot better than the Gary Cooper movie of The Fountainhead, for starters.

New CD Album Releases, 4-26-2011: Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Robert Johnson Centennial

April 26th, 2011

Robert JohnsonThere are a couple of moderately interesting new releases this week. Steve Earle has I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive. The previews sound pretty listenable. Also, Emmylou Harris has Hard Bargain.

Also there is a Robert Johnson Centennial Collection on the occasion of his 100th birthday. However, he didn’t make it past age 26. He spent a total of five days recording 29 songs. I appreciate the idea of paying the greatest of the traditional original blues guitarists and songwriters his props, but there are obviously no new recordings to find. Plus, there’s only so much they can do with cleaning up the sound of these 75 year old recordings. You can DOWNLOAD ALL OF ROBERT JOHNSON’S SONGS freely at MoreThings. Perhaps you’d like to start with the “Me and the Devil Blues.”

New CD Album Releases, 4-19-2011: Gorillaz, Brian Setzer

April 19th, 2011

The Gorillaz new album The Fall comes with the technical distinction of being the first major album recorded entirely on an Apple iPad or some such. The full album is available for free listening on the official website. You can save yourself the bother, for I have done so for you and can tell you that there’s no songwriting here to speak of, and not even one lame hook that I could remember even while I was listening to it. Pretty much a total waste. There’s definitely no “Clint Eastwood” here.

Brian Setzer has an instrumental album this week, Setzer Goes Instru-MENTAL!. Mostly, he’s making like Chet Atkins here. He actually sounds pretty credible at it, as you might best tell from his rendition of “Blue Moon of Kentucky” which is available for free download from Amazon. I’ve thought of him mostly as a stylist, but this set shows him off doing some fancy picking worth listening to. From my only moderate knowledge of his catalog, I’d pick this as perhaps his best work outside the Stray Cats.

New CD Album Releases, 4-12-2011: Paul Simon, Alison Krauss, k.d. lang, Foo Fighters

April 12th, 2011

Paul Simon playing a cigar box guitar
Praise be to the Lord for giving us Paul Simon, for it is much like Christmas Day whenever he gives us a new album. In 2011, Christ sends down his love on the wings of a Jew in So Beautiful or So What. He particularly sings in anticipation of the true King of the Jews in the first song and lead single “Getting Ready for Christmas Day”. With any luck, this song will become a staple of Christmas music broadcasting, providing a moment of real and moving art amidst the regular nonsense.

At least half of these songs are sure to be regarded as classics. You really have to hear “Rewrite.” I start to say that it has the most amazing and beautiful guitar sounds on any Paul Simon song, but I’m not sure exactly what instruments are playing the things here. There are liner credits for instruments I can’t even spell with the booklet in front of me. But somebody here plays stuff like I never heard before.

Then there’s “Love Is Eternal Sacred Light” which is a beautiful title to meditate on. In the documentary DVD that comes with the album, Simon talks about watching a guy in Missisippi playing Delta blues and giving him this cigar box guitar, and he’s picking out a little of the riff that becomes this song. Except that when I hear the record, it sounds like some freaky idea of a techno record – though you’d certainly never mistake this for Moby. So it’s kind of a Delta blues techno record with strong hooks and a great feeling of dramatic urgency. If that idea sounds at all intriguing to you, then you’ll likely think this is an awesome song.

More notes and pictures for So Beautiful or So What

Alison Krauss is back with Paper Airplane. It is her first album since the big hit collaboration with Robert Plant on Raising Sand in 2007. It is her first album with her Union Station band since 2004. Just listening to previews, I didn’t hear any hooks. It sounds very classy and respectable.

New CD Album Releases, 3-29-2011: Snoop Dogg, Radiohead, Britney Spears, Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis

March 29th, 2011

Snoop DoggRadiohead are back this week with The King of Limbs, which is the #2 seller currently at Amazon. Sometimes they try to write actual songs, which makes for some good work. Sometimes they are more after Pink Floyd atmospherics, which seems to be more the case here. Lots of involved instrumental loops and layers of whatnot, but is there a hook or a real melody under any of of this?

Snoop Dogg is back with what is credited as his 11th album, Doggumentary. Haven’t heard the whole thing, but the samples present some agreeable grooves. There’s also a really cute duet with Willie Nelson about not being “Superman.” It’s worth a listen for that song alone.

Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis team up for their second Blue Note album, this time a live Lincoln Center tribute to Ray Charles. Half the songs feature Norah Jones. These people are all nice and all. They play and sing real good, and the idea of this superstar lineup sounds cool and all. It would be cool to have been there and see this show. But I don’t see why anyone would really listen to an album like this when they could just as easily be listening to Ray.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton 1967 Taming of the Shrew Pictures

March 29th, 2011

On the occasion of Liz Taylor’s passing, I’ve been working up some image galleries for her 1967 film Taming of the Shrew, starring as the titular shrew Katherina opposite Richard Burton as manly Petruchio.

Al Barger blames the gov’ment

March 26th, 2011

So I’m sitting in my cubicle dialing the phone and bitching to my neighbor about the dad blame gov’ment. This inspired a young co-worker to a little caricature. I think Brother Cody caught my spirit quite well. Notice how my spirited response in the second frame blows my co-worker back against his chair.

Al Barger sez the gov'ment caused everything!

PS Like I was saying, the gov’ment did in fact cause everything. I blame them.

New CD Album Releases, 3-22-2011: Duran Duran, Jennifer Hudson

March 22nd, 2011

All You Need Is Now is the lucky 13th studio album from Duran Duran. It features the four original members, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Nick Rhodes and Simon Le Bon. I’m at least a middling Duran fan. They’re not the deepest and most profound music of their generation, but you really have to respect their serious professional pop songwriting, arranging and record making skills. However, I haven’t heard a note of this new album, so I can’t say anything for it one way or another.

New CD Album Releases, 3-15-2011: Steve Martin, Bob Geldof, Al Di Meola, New York Dolls

March 15th, 2011

Steve Martin playing banjoSteve Martin is back for a second album of banjo based original songs, Rare Bird Alert – crediting the band as the Steep Canyon Rangers. His Crow album was perhaps the best album of 2010. He gets some extra love for the title “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs.” He also reaches back for a banjo arrangement of “King Tut.” This loses the somewhat stiff Egyptian premise of the original arrangment for something with more groove. These two albums are some of the best work of anything in Mr. Martin’s illustrious and multi-formatted career.

After years of playing St. Bob of LiveAid, Most Holy Moral Authority negotiating with world leaders and such, Bob Geldof has apparently played that string out and been reduced back to his dayjob as a pop singer. I’d like to hate on him some more, but I must say that the little bits of his new How to Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell album that I’ve heard sound promising.
