COMMENTS: Perhaps only Ray Charles could make a record that hurts
this bad while grooving this hard. Start with that insistently honking sax
riff and that little burst of trumpet punctuation before the vocal starts, and
add in the quickly paced conga sounding drums. Add those elements one at a
time, plus the lead vocal and female harmoies, then stop it dead for a split
second. The man knew what he was doing.
Oh, what a beautiful agony. Check out the heartsickness in the melody, the
hurt in the jump to "heart." Poor Ray is anxious, begging
for release from a one sided love affair. Notice how he gets his vocal
effects not by straining himself and risking a hernia (like Michael
Bolton), but by subtle nuances - leaning on certain words, a little louder
("life of MISery") or perhaps with extra rasp ("spell"), or
drawing them out a little against the beat.
How is it that this guy's records have ended up put in the "easy
listening" or "MOR" sections of the record store?
