Season 4, Episode 6 "Insurgents"

Air date:  4-19-05

When the series started, Claudette was intended to be the principle voice of conscience in the shop, but that's changed over time.  Since she first got a whiff of promotion a season and a half ago, she's been consumed with her own power issues and then resentments over having this promotion taken away.

Meantime, Julien has emerged this season as the true voice of conscience.  As a strong Christian and a native of this Farmington district, this makes good sense.  He's exhibited none of the personal professional ambition or power lust that have consumed Claudette.  Despite his religious nature, he doesn't seem to frame his thinking in terms of self-aggrandizing personal righteousness, as Claudette often does. He really does just want to make his neighborhood a better place.

Thus, we see him highly conflicted internally over the hard tactics of the new captain.  He wants to support the cops over the bad guys- thus his very helpful personal testimony last week ("Tar Baby") at the community forum.  He understands and appreciates that Captain Rawling is making life considerably more difficult for the bad guys.

Yet he emerges in this episode as the main in-house opposition to Captain Rawling.  At what cost are we doing these things?  Last week, he found himself carrying a sick child out of his home while the innocent dad was getting a beat down for resisting an unnecessary neighborhood evacuation which the captain had called in order to try to flush out a suspect.  The disapproving looks of the gathered neighbors only reinforced his own discomfort.

Invading a church this week brought things to a head for him.  When the minister refused to co-operate with their search warrant, and locked the doors (with the congregation inside), Captain Rawling (not entirely unreasonably) insisted on going in.  Julien simply refused to help literally break down the doors of a church.  The fact that they eventually found 12 kilos of heroin in the building did little to make Julien feel better about it.  Seeing the young girl being dunked in the baptismal while the cops are breaking glass and storming the place, it's easy enough to see his point.

Later, Rawling responded by giving him a temporary re-assignment to desk duty, and suggested that if he couldn't support her efforts, he should consider requesting a transfer.  With due respect to Julien's conscience, Captain Rawling took it quite easy on him.  That was insubordination, and he could have been fired, or at least seriously punished.  You can't have officers on a scene refusing to follow orders.  That won't work.

Then there's the bigger issue of Rawlings' asset seizure plan, which has sent Julien to now Councilman Aceveda looking for help in stopping her.  He's not that concerned about dope dealers getting the pimp rides confiscated, but what if someone targeted for seizure is innocent?  This is the same top concern that Aceveda and many real life opponents have made.  They take the property, and then the citizen has to prove that they're NOT guilty.  Poor folks in Farmington can't afford lawyers for stuff like this (unless they really are drug dealers).  Also, even if you somehow have saved a little money, you're going to have trouble spending it on an attorney if it's been seized in this asset forfeiture.

Julien has now definitely gone past the tipping point to thinking that the cure is worse than the disease.  He's not going to just shut up, and he's not going to just conveniently transfer out.  He's going to stay and fight for HIS neighborhood- even though that means directly going up against his captain.

The dynamics of this emerging conflict between Julien and his captain should be interesting, particularly from the point of view of seeing how she handles him.  Captain Rawling has shown herself to be capable of being quite the hardass, yet she's honest and fair minded.  She doesn't seem likely to use underhanded or overbearing tactics to remove this opposition.

It's a wonder that Lem didn't mess Shane up a lot worse than he did.  Here's this nice little 14 year old Angie, who has had a rough time. Lem's trying to help her as a juvi cop, but she gets disappeared and likely dead for giving him a drug tip.  Lem's got every reason to think that Shane told Antwon about her, getting her killed.  This would be about enough to suggest the deep need for Shane to suffer direct physical abuse, even without all the previous bad blood.

Really, it's not quite as bad as Lem thinks it is.  Shane's in bed with Antwon, but he did NOT specifically give him the girl.  For starters, all the neighbors on the block watched the fairly conspicuous site last week of Angie bringing a bunch of white cops in to talk to her dopehead mother.

Nonetheless, Shane can't explain that because he won't admit to his involvement with Antwon, and that he's tipped him off repeatedly, et.  Absent knowing what Shane's doing exactly, Lem is perfectly justified and mostly correct in assuming the worst.

-------------------------------------------------

The spy cam in Shane's car in the last scene had a fairly chilling dramatic effect.  This represents a new low in relations within the group. "It's about stopping Shane."

Yet it was set up very nicely last week, when they had the spy cam on Dutch's disappointing date.  They were just joking around then, though, not trying to bring somebody down.  The seriousness of the violation was played off as mere frivolity.

Claudette's mad act with Dutch has grown tiresome.  Particularly, it is ill sequenced.  She knew that the Webster setup wasn't kosher even before she went undercover to bust him.  She let it go and went along at the time.  Then would have been the time to pitch a bitch.

At this point, she's just mad at the world for not twisting around on it's axis to suit her righteous agenda. The nominal voice of conscience has developed into a surprisingly unsympathetic character.

-------------------------------------------------

Relish the thought of Dutch dating Corrine.  She seems to be open to it.  Besides being generally healthy and confidence boosting, doing Corrine -Vic's still not quite ex-wife - would be the perfect rolled up payoff for every stupid little playground bully routine Vic has put on him the whole series.  This runs from hiding his chair even on "Day One" all the way up to this week's "exposed wires DICK" sign.

Plus, if Vic cheeses her off good again, this would also be a good way for her to repay Vic's various ill behavior and indiscretions.

Also, Corrine doesn't know Dutch or his place in the Barn that well.  The more she understands Vic's dislike for Dutch, the better he's going to look

Note that Dutch came to her at just that moment when he had stepped in to take care of the daughter, while suavely carefully NOT talking Vic down as he did it.
