Season 4, Episode 8 "Cut Throat"

You have to love Captain Rawling. She may be quite the authoritarian hardass, but she's got heart. Here she is buying a house in her own troubled Farmington district, right in amongst the bangers and such. She notes that only 15% of the officers live in the district, and naturally believes that total immersion is the only way to make a real difference. She's putting not just her mortgage money where her mouth is, but her ass as well.
She naturally automatically vetoed Vic's suggestion of extra patrols in her new neighborhood for her protection. Just as naturally, Vic discreetly went behind her back to get them anyway.

Vic's threat to Antwon seemed awfully damned weak, all in all. Vic knows that Antwon has absolutely murdered a little girl, and has a hit out on him. Yet the worst threat is that Antwon might end up "spitting out teeth." Whoo, see me shaking?

Probably the best dramatic scene tonight belonged to Danny. She had a great little speech, trying to talk a CI with gang affiliations to just take her son and get out. Not that it did any good.

Somebody badly needs to take a 2x4 upside David Aceveda's head. There are several grounds for giving him a good old-fashioned Hank Jr attitude adjustment, but particularly tonight some of his crazy jealous control freak nonsense with the hooker takes the cake. Early in the show, Aceveda has shown up for his scheduled schtup, but she nicely runs him off after getting a phone call from her "sister." Aceveda hangs around outside to see that it is in fact another client. He takes down the license plate, and has Julien look up the registration.
He comes back on the hooker, all hostile and threatening because he feels slighted. For crying in a frickin' bucket, this is a PROSTITUTE. She had a little scheduling conflict. Yet he's obviously been spending his time brooding and plotting ways to hurt the other john, a rich businessman whom he's never even met. Why? You see, Aceveda is to be second to NO ONE with her.
He eventually salves his wounded ego with another of his cheesy little scripted "rapes." The educated, sophisticated city councilman is paying a woman not just to have sex, but to feed him back obviously scripted lines about how "powerful" he is. This speaks of really dumb, shallow ideas of manhood for someone with Aceveda's credentials.
Yes, Aceveda was raped, and that sucked both literally and figuratively. However, Aceveda has milked that business as an excuse for an exceptional LOT of nonsense behavior with everyone for about a year now. Time to get the hell over it, and get a grip on yourself.
This does not constitute criticism of the show or the writing. It's actually very well thought out, and well written. Think about the details in dialogue of exactly how he could hurt his rival john.

We could definitely stand to see more of the Dutch/Corrine relationship. They seem to be in a honeymoon phase, though it has not yet been made clear that the relationship has specifically been consummated. Anyway, Corrine needs no more excuse than Dutch getting splashed with coffee by a suspect for them to "celebrate."
It's a wonder we didn't see this relationship coming long ago. Dutch makes for a happy medium in Corrine's men. After big, overbearing macho Vic, she had gone to Owen the therapist. He had advantages of being communicative and sensitive, but was also a complete wussy. When she got beat a season or two back, Owen was just worthless. Dutch has some of those same desirable traits of sensitivity and communicativeness. However, he's also a cop with a gun personally taking down robbers and murderers. Macho wise, Dutch may be a rung or two down from Vic, but he's still way more macho than some touchy-feely therapist.
It's also a wonder that Vic hasn't noticed the relationship, particularly with them talking in the middle of the barn as he came in.

Corrine came to Vic with a tough dilemna. They want desperately to get Megan into a research group trying a new clinical drug to treat her autism. Corrine has seen video of children getting remarkable results from this drug. Yet the drug company has rejected her apparently very openly and specifically because they have a lawsuit against the drug companies on behalf of Matthew, the other autistic child.
This doesn't seem quite credible. It makes sense in terms of the motivations of the drug maker, but it seems highly unlikely that such discrimination would be legal. Seems like that in itself would be grounds for a lawsuit.

They've been very good at coming up with little ways to make Antwon particularly evil. It turns out tonight that after he killed little 14 year old Angie, he had her buried underneath a port-a-potty. Practically, as Shane points out, this would help cover whatever smell comes from the corpse. Nonetheless, it would be hard to imagine a more disrespectful treatment- particularly for the remains of a child.

Some of the best dramatic tension tonight came from Ronnie and Lem worrying about Vic. Vic himself was by turns totally confident of his abilities of self defense against the threat of Shane, and half-suicidal anyway. Lem and Ronnie were far more worried about Vic than he was, and there was a lot of emotional tension as they stood there helpless.

Vic was just about suicidal by the end of the night. He apparently had about half a mind to just LET Shane kill him. Corrine caught a whiff of it when he showed up with a backpack full of money for her, wanting to look in on the sleeping children. "It sounds like goodbye."
His confrontation with Shane turned out ultimately as it pretty much had to in terms of the series. They couldn't kill off either of these principal characters, which is where it was leading up to. The other obvious option was the natural character expression for Shane. He humbled himself and confessed to Vic, begging for his help.
Vic's seemingly suicidal gesture here was curious, though. He absolutely had Shane at gunpoint. He completely had the drop on him. Also, Shane has at least halfway made his confession and repentance. Even then Vic apparently offered Shane a free shot at him. "You've got one shot." Was he really that depressed over his little personal setbacks at work?
