Season 5, Episode 6 "Rap Payback"

Air date:  2-14-06

Lt Kavanaugh seems more and more evil by the week.  Now, Vic's absolutely a cold-blooded murderer.  He's done more inarguably corrupt things than you could shake a stick at.  If Kavanaugh busts him, Vic's sure as hell got it coming- and more.

But Kavanaugh seems far more evil, without having done anything violent or absolutely illegal.  Basically, Kavanaugh is "right," but so what?  For starters, he doesn't do a damned thing to take a murderer or drug dealer off the streets.  If the purpose of cops is "to protect and serve," Kavanaugh and his obsession with Vic doesn't do crap to make the public safer.

For one thing, Kavanaugh represents the ruthlessness of virtue.  He's the good cop, and Vic's done some very bad things.  Therefore, this guy presumes to push it to the line in every possible way, playing every kind of fear, guilt and intimidation legal and moral that he can find on absolutely anyone even vaguely connected with Vic.  After all, he's after "justice."

Note that Vic generally confines his strong arming and thugin' to criminals what badly have it coming to them.  Think back, for example, to the first season when he simply wouldn't move against the Nation of Islam folk who were making life miserable for him.

Witness for contrast Kavanaugh's big scene this week with Officer Sofer.  He starts with holding up the office pool regarding the father of her child, and a thickly hypocritical display of sympathy.  "Pretty demeaning."  She's some seven or eight months pregnant and single, and he's absolutely threatening her job status and security right at this moment to force her to formally file papers with the department acknowledging a couple year old sexual affair with Vic.

There's no suspicion that she knows anything about the Crowley killing he's investigating, or that she's involved in ANY of Vic's bad dealings.  But Kavanaugh's "righteous" and he'll do whatever he has to do to get at the truth. He's perfectly happy to tear up the life of a young mother and dedicated officer on the off chance that she'll have any scrap of information that might help him get Vic.

The very bestest scene tonight was Kavanaugh's interrogation of Vic's ex-wife Corrine.  He has her brought in- along with her kids.  He's threatening her again with prison.  "Vic is not going to take care of your kids when you're gone."

For starters, that's a goddam lie right there.  Vic would do whatever he has to do to see that his kids are taken care of.  Moreover, Kavanaugh damn well knows that.  He's obsessed enough with Vic, and talks enough about his ideas of loyalty to know better than what he's saying.

He spins a big story to play to her fears, explaining that Vic has a lawyer for him and the boys- but not for her.  He presumes that for evidence that Vic's ready to let her go to prison.  For what?  She shouldn't be NEEDING a lawyer.  She's done nothing.  Vic would certainly get her one if necessary, but it's just dumb to think she'd need one.  Kavanaugh is just preying in a most wicked and ruthless manner on her feelings of vulnerability.  Vic would protect her.  Kavanaugh's the one who wants to send her to prison for the high crime of having been married to Vic.

Plus, he's threatening a mother with special needs children with prison for absolutely no other real reason than having been formerly married to Vic.  "You protect him, and you lie."   There's no idea that she really knew anything.  Well, Vic keeps coming up with money for the kids, and Corrine shared his bed for 12 years, so she MUST have known he was crooked.

But what kind of JERK thinks that's justification for the wickedness he's putting on her?  He whips out crime scene photos of the dead snitch and forces her to look at them.  "DON"T CRY!"  he demands.  You have NO right to cry "cause tears imply you didn't know."

In fact, she didn't know.  There's no reason to think she knew or co-operated in any way.  He presumes a general knowledge that he's broadly crooked, and leverages every possible threat of the force of law against her presuming she knows details that he should pretty well know by this point that she doesn't have.

Then just to drive home the point of resentment, to wedge between the husband and wife, Kavanaugh brings in Danny- whom we've just seen forced into confessing to having been involved with Vic.  He's going to make sure to make it clear that this would have been from when Vic and Corrine were still married.

Then he simply states as a matter of fact that Danny is specifically pregnant with Vic's baby.  I'd call this another big fat IAD LIE, in that he has no basis of knowledge for that.  Danny has not said who the father is.  Kavanaugh just assumes it, and tells Corrine this right at that moment of vulnerability.

Yet if Vic blew this bastard's brains out against the back wall, it would get made out as if Vic was the bad guy.  Go figure.

Meanwhile, as to solving actual crimes, Vic's pretty well preoccupied with covering his ass against Kavanaugh, so it's lucky that he was given a gimme case this week.  Personally, I wanted to shoot this "Casper"  just on general principles of stupidity.  This white boy named Preston is one of the world's dumbest damned wiggers.  Oh yeah, and he murdered several guys.

But he's so frickin' stupid running his mouth in the station like he's Snoop Dogg.  It took about two seconds for Shane to push his buttons with the race stuff, and have him talking all stupid about getting more black ass than a bus bench in Compton or some such.  But more specifically, they got him to thoroughly disrespect his white girlfriend Moni in graphic terms.

Besides being ungentlemanly, this was particularly STUPID of him, given that she was his alibi for the murders, and had hid his gun.  So when they play her back the interrogation room tape with him talking about her "swallowing nut" and so forth, perhaps he shouldn't have been so surprised when she just turned over the gun and recanted her story.  "Bitches ain't shit."  Idiot.

Meanwhile, Dutch trying to negotiate Claudette's lupus is generating interesting strains on their relationship and job performance, and probably got a couple of people killed.  For his part, Dutch convinced a murder suspect's sister to let him search her house.  He went in without backup for fear that his sick partner wasn't up to it.  Sister Fatima Gardner is letting Dutch search his stuff when Clevon returns unexpectedly, and Dutch is hiding and sneaking out.  It's undetermined if Clevon saw Dutch, but Sis has gone missing.

But it's certain that Claudette working on Clevon back at the station has set him off.  She's gone hard enough with him, apparently got up under his skin enough to murder some random middle aged black woman who just looks a little like Officer Wyms.

This heavy dramatic show has a lot of humor.  Indeed, just as a side dish, The Shield is a lot funnier than most run of the mill sitcoms.  Yet I have been sometimes more impressed with the way they often have not gone in for the cheap laughs, but for other more unique and interesting artistic ends such as tonight..

The glory hole story with Julien and young trainee Tina tonight was a prime example of this.  Some schmuck has been going around setting off rat traps on poor schmoes foolish enough to stick their schlongs into glory holes.  They found themselves tending to some poor injured and obviously grossly humiliated dude tonight- yet there wasn't even vaguely a joke anywhere in the presentation.  For starters, that represents pretty fair self-discipline from the writers.

Not that there would be anything wrong with some humor, but they had bigger fish to fry with this line.  It turns out to be another bit of interesting twist in their relationship rather than a cheap punchline.  Hot young Tina was really the soul of compassion and understanding for this poor dumb fat slob with the injured wang.

Julien, on the other hand, was- in his polite and professional manner- much more inclined to be a hardass.  He wanted to formally cite the guy for lewd conduct, at least nominally to the end of pressuring him to co-operate in finding the guy with the rat traps.  A casual viewer not knowing the background of Officer Lowe might miss the point, but this guy rubs up against the officer's lingering self-hatred for his own now heavily repressed homosexual desires.

Through a typically stupidly inept attempt at humor, Captain Billings accidentally tips young Tina off to this past that she had no prior knowledge of.  Putting two and two together, she ever so discreetly and nicely tells her training officer Julien that she gets his conflict, and she's cool with it, putting it in terms of growing up watching the struggles of her gay uncle.  Besides which she notes, that's all between Julien and his wife.

Now, you could argue that she should have just let it alone, but obviously she's trying really hard to make nice. She was carefully and specifically NOT trying to push him into talking.  Considering his sensitivities as a Christian and all, he might have just blown her off, and not had much response.

Instead, he got mad at her, and lashed out that he should have washed her out of training long ago.  That was absolutely uncalled for.  Granted, she's green.  She had a couple of innocent but could-have-been-bad screw ups in the first couple of episodes of the season.  But she didn't do anything wrong tonight, or anything much wrong in awhile.  He's absolutely just lashing out at her for finally reading his cards.

Meanwhile, they end up the episode with Kavanaugh making what I would guess to be likely his ultimate stupid misstep.  Specifically, he put former Captain and current City Councilman Aceveda under formal investigation as a suspected collaborator with Vic Mackey and his Strike Team.  He presented him with papers notifying him of this, and demanding his signature.

This is just stupid on Kavanaugh's part on about a half dozen obvious levels.  He doesn't have squat on Vic, really, much less his former captain.  Besides which, Kavanaugh has Vic in his sites over the Crowley murder precisely and ONLY because of Aceveda's investigation that he instigated at the time.  Conceivably, Kavanaugh might think that Aceveda occasionally turned a bit of a blind eye to Vic's tactics, but I don't see how anyone who knows the situation as thoroughly as this IAD officer obviously does could seriously believe that Aceveda was any kind of partner in crime.

At some point, we're going to be seeing a payoff with the Kavanaugh character, some revelation of his particular weird obsessions that are driving this foolishness.   He seems to be clearly running on some dark personal stuff rather than any kind of idea of rational police work.  It'll be interesting to see some denouement on that topic.

Meantime, he seems to be flatly self-sabotaging with this dumb move against Aceveda.  How else can that really play except that Aceveda turns on IAD, and puts his political muscle to shutting this fool down?  He might have to be a bit Machiavellian and sneaky about it, being a target of the investigation and all, but obviously the politician is going to protect himself.  Even if you're not particularly sympathetic to Aceveda as a personality, you couldn't expect him NOT to watch his own interests like this.  What else is he supposed to do?

So once again, we end with the corrupt politician being pushed into bed with the crooked cops.
