THE SHIELD

SEASON THREE NOTES

Season 3, Episode 10  “What Power Is...”

Air date: 5-11-04

They finally gave Aceveda's rapist a name.  Juan Lezamo had a bad day.  No, he's NOT going to kill him.  He's more interested in re-establishing his control than in revenge- though killing the partner in the pre-credits sequence probably helped satisfy some deep urges that way.

He's been studying up, using his superior intellect and power bring the pimp hand down on this little punk, and really put the fear of God into him.

Aceveda's interrogation of Juan may be the best Aceveda scene in the whole run of the series.  Watch him breaking this guy's life down to him, calmly detailing what he knows about Juan and his family- and just what ways he could hurt them.  Aceveda would be perfectly willing to get his old sickly grandmother deported back to Mexico to die.  Damn, that's C-O-L-D.

"I know what magazines you jerk off to that you don't think Alicia knows about."  As far as this guy is concerned, Aceveda is omniscient and omnipotent.

-------------------------------------------

Looking closely and repeatedly at the nuance of the robbery scene, notice the stupid petty greed of Ricky- which may have been just the little element that got him killed.  The old Korean has stuffed the money from the register in the bag while Aceveda is sneaking up the back.  Then Ricky insists "coins, too" and stands there while the old man is fishing out the change.

There's ambiguity in reading this, but it sure looks like that's what got the punk killed. If he'd just taken the bills and got gone, he'd have probably been out the door before Aceveda was in place to shoot him.  That extra 20 or 30 seconds of fooling around with the change cost him his dumb ass.

This petty greed costing your ass reminds me of the first two episodes of the series, in which Detective Crowley insisted on getting a bunch of promises of rewards from the feds in writing before he'd snitch on Vic, which led to things being taken up the chain of command at US Justice- and coming back down to Vic.

-------------------------------------------

The editing, the choice of the last seconds leading into the opening credits often makes a big impact.  It leaves you with a lingering image.  Sometimes they hit something really shocking, such as the severely charred guy from the meth lab still alive in the trunk during the first season.

In this case, they had a more low key last thought at the end of the convenience store shoot out.  Aceveda has killed the rapist's partner Ricky, the photographer, and the others have fled.  Before he does anything else, he fishes out the guy's camera phone, and gives a big sigh of relief.  Left to ruminate on that lingering image for a minute, you can see what a big emotion was involved for Aceveda in that nominal afterthought of the big shoot out.

-------------------------------------------

Aceveda seems perhaps overly confident of his analysis about the picture, however.  He explained to Lezamo that he was too stupid to have figured out how to download the picture to a disc.

Maybe Lezamo is stupid, but how hard is it?  More importantly, what about the partner- the photographer to whom the equipment actually belonged.

Aceveda may feel all re-assured, but what are the odds that damned picture is going to show up again, splashed across the internet?

-------------------------------------------

The ending scene was rather funny, watching Aceveda playing the press, and explaining that his personal heroics came simply from trying to live up to the example his men set for him every day.  Oh, Jebus, that was beautiful

What was really funny was the new air of restored confidence in his step.  By the time he's dragging Aurora out into his press conference, he looks like he's had a double dose of Levitra.

-------------------------------------------

I also started liking Juan a bit as he mocked Aceveda in the interrogation.  "Why don't you suck my dick...again."  Of course, five minutes later the starch has gone out of him.

-------------------------------------------

They caught the cuddler rapist, a Will Falk   A lot of the interest here comes from how much he does NOT obviously look like the culprit.  Seems to have a nice, educated middle class home with no kind of criminal record.

Indeed, the actual guy goes enough against expectations that Dutch would have missed him.  Now, they came across this guy because of Dutch's specific work- checking records of parking ticket recipients near crime scenes.  He was so far from expectations, however, that Dutch dismissed him, and only continued looking into this guy at Claudette's insistence.

His wife, Joanna Falk, particularly confounded Dutch's expectations, largely by being so...British (ie white) and pretty?  No, Claudette, independent was the correct answer.  By his typical and usually very astute profiling, he didn't expect a serial rapist and murderer to have a woman at all, much less a smart, starchy woman like Miss Joanna.

The light went on, though, at the follow-up visit to the Falk house when Dutch opened the cabinet door and saw those figurines that we knew were Will's rape trophies.  What kind of sick bastard rapes and even murders senior citizens, then takes their little trinket figurines home to the nice young wife as gifts?  This is one sick puppy.

-------------------------------------------

Note how Dutch and Claudette -the show's official Voice of Conscience- lied their asses off to Mrs Falk to get her co-operation, and specifically to get her to sign a consent to search the house.  They made up a story wholecloth about an anonymous tip about some petty robberies, and how this would be the easiest way to clear them up.

Considering what kind of ugly character they were after, this deception might be excusable.  Still, I'd consider this lying to be as bad or worse than most of Vic's famously questionable tactics.  I'd probably take being tricked like this worse than, say, a having the bong stuck down my throat as per Juan, or a quick kidney punch.

I'm just saying that it pays to be skeptical of the morally upright.

-------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------

It might slip past you as a quiet, non-confrontational scene amidst all the action, but Vic had one of his biggest asshole scenes of the series here with the ex.  Vic absolutely and unequivocally insisted that she fire Matthew's therapist.  Vic absolutely consciously put his own territorial jealousy ahead of the good of his own autistic son, pushing away the one person who has demonstrably been able to help him.  This is REALLY bad on Vic.

Granted, Matthew drew the therapist into his family picture instead of Daddy.  Nor does Daddy appreciate this Volvo driving wussy doing HIS wife.  Tough.  He needs to be a big man, and swallow his pride.

-------------------------------------------

In some sense, Vic has turned down the heat a bit since the pilot episode.  Again, he absolutely bald faced assassinated not even a perp, but a brother officer.  He hasn't absolutely just murdered anyone else since, even though there have been at least a couple of times that would have been much more justified.

Still, he certainly is willing to occasionally let, nay encourage someone else to take out a really inconvenient person.  In this case, Vic was anxious to convince Diagar to take out Juan on what were unfounded fears that he was going to somehow connect Vic back to the Money Train.  He was really leaning on Diagar to take out Juan.

-------------------------------------------

For the second time, Vic showed up busting in the door on Aceveda and Juan.  On the day of The Incident, Vic's arrival may likely have been what saved Aceveda's life.

In this case, Aceveda had just captured Juan, and ordered him to get down on his knees.  It hung in the air for some seconds what exactly he might have had in mind...then Vic comes busting in.

Was Aceveda intending to let Juan return the favor?

This type of speculation is particularly invited by the way the network promoted this episode.  They featured just exactly that few seconds of "get down on your knees" in their promo clip shown hundreds of times as a teaser, begging for speculation on where it goes from there.

-------------------------------------------

About the time I'm getting convinced that Mara is THE worst poisonous bitch around, along comes the mother that she's been wailing about.  On the one hand, mom is surprisingly HOT- but more evil than sin.

So her daughter and future son-in-law GAVE her $7,000.  Her first reaction then, when they told her that there were sensitive legal issues so therefore she shouldn't talk about that gift was to blackmail her pregnant daughter.for several thousand more dollars.

She has no clue where this money came from, or how dangerous it is.  How easily could this evil woman find herself with no feet?  She about DESERVES to have the Armenian mob get a hold of her.  Blackmailing her pregnant daughter after she has been given thousands of dollars?  Criminy.
