Season 3, Episode 5 “Mum”

The set up for what cast and crew refer to as The Incident was excellent. Relative to the sense of pressure Vic was feeling, he probably didn't think he was doing anything particularly harsh in shoving the Byz-Lat punk's bong down his throat.
Yet this is just the kind of stupid little thing to make him want to rape a cop. Obviously, he's been on the other end of this in prison. Vic did just enough to pull up all that humiliation, and make him want to pass it on. "Did you ever suck a dick like a cell bitch, cop man?" Note that the future rapist's first words were to call Vic a "faggot."

This is the second time in three episodes that Vic has symbolically orally raped someone, along with Farrah in "Bottom Bitch." This does seem like a very Vic type of thing to do, and thinking back it seems like we should have been seeing more of it. Given what a prick and a bully Vic is, it makes sense that he would be figuratively ramming himself down people's throats.

Denial by rape victims was the big theme of the show, thus the title "Mum." Aceveda was already in denial before his attackers got out of the building. They fled when Vic showed up. Though the moment of danger was past, Aceveda was furiously anxious to get himself untied before Vic could get in the door and figure out what had just happened.

It might not sound that funny out of context, but a special bitter comedy award for the uni who didn't find Aceveda when he was sent to pick him up, and said "Probably had a limo come pick him up." That's a good little class conscious joke on the big shot captain/city councilman elect- except of course that the big shot was not riding in a limo. Rather, he was probably within earshot, tied up and fixing to be raped.

"No harm done. Let's not waste any time on it." With his particular masculine cluelessness, Vic didn't notice anything wrong. It was occasion for a joke with Dutch about publicity seeking. You could see from his lingering and his quizzical look that Dutch sensed something wrong right then, though.

Skepticism should be the word in most things having to do with human character and motivation- particularly with people who are too good and perfect, and people with altruistic motivation.
To put it differently, Claudette is perfectly capable of being a petty little bitch. Watch how she's riding Vic here.
Specifically, she's purposely screwing with Vic, sticking it in him in a petty and vindictive manner right up front in her pre-credits sequence. Vic's close team member has just been badly hurt, in the hospital in "grave" condition. Yet within two or three hours, she's absolutely insisting that Vic head out on a dumbass patrol to roust "cruisers and loiterers."
Then, notice how crappy she is to find out that Vic was following up a prison smuggling ring that he learned about on these rounds rather than rousting more petty loiterers. What's the logic in that, other than spiting Vic?

On the other hand, Vic couldn't just leave well enough alone. He couldn't just spend his night rousting the loiterers as instructed. He had to get over on Claudette, and get into something bigger and more interesting.
Which insistence opened up multiple cans of worms. It was following that smuggling which brought in the Byz-Lat with the marked bills from the money train, and set Vic into major crisis mode.
Further, it was following that smuggler that led Aceveda into The Incident.

The original knock on Aceveda from the start of the series was that he was, as he himself put it in the first season, a "test taker" who didn't earn it on the streets. He's undeniably smart and talented, but he's an affirmative action beneficiary run up the ladder with a minimum of practical experience.
This cost him at the scene of The Incident. No one on the Strike Team would have put themselves in the position to be jumped from behind like that. Aceveda should have KNOWN that the guy he first announced himself to had a partner with him. He found out about the guy being there because he heard him talking about the missing money. Did he think he was talking to himself?

Mara had one little bit of quirky neurotic behavior that struck me tonight though not quite like with a clothes iron. She objected to Vic disposing of the clothes iron with which she struck the critical blow to Tavon. She and Shane are facing the possibility of criminal charges, and she's worried about saving a $10 iron. That's so dumb, yet I could really see it. Perhaps it's another form of denial.
Note also how quick and convincing Mara was with a lie when Vic showed up asking how Shane got so beat up. For all her initial resistance to Vic, and stated general dislike for cops, she's going to blend right in with this bunch of liars.

A small thing, perhaps, but this may qualify as the just
plain yuckiest closing shot of any episode in the series, with Aceveda spending
the last seconds of the show retching over the toilet. They had a valid
dramatic point, showing Aceveda purely physically ill after his denial.
Still, was this necessary?
