COMMENTS: John Lennon surely appreciated a nice, nasty blues groove. This ode to the joys of simultaneous orgasm started as a little political statement to donate to Tim Leary. Lennon decided to keep it, however, when he saw just how filthy it was getting.

 

It turned out pig nasty. By nasty, I mean this music could inspire you to rut in the mud with your old lady or somebody else's, half baked and ready to get freaky. It's not the lyrics particularly, which are ambiguous. It is the whole licentious groove of the thing. After the basic Chuck Berry cruising mode of the verse, he hits the command of the tag line, and you have little choice but to obey. "Come to-ge-ther... right no-ow... over me."

 

Despite their many and varied talents, the Beatles were never known for being particularly funky. They never fully absorbed the rhythmic innovations of James Brown, which he was still busy defining at this point. However, this is about the closest any Beatle ever got. With the high tech nature of the whole record, and the just generally weird sound, it probably comes out closer to the funk sound of Sly Stone. Something like that.

 

On top of that, he brings in his mates to join the orgy. Ringo gives up the best remembered hook of his career with the famous descending roll. That piano player sounds like he's been out back giving it up for someone or something.  (God bless Billy Preston.) Good old George Harrison contributed a stinging slide guitar line nasty enough to remind you that he knows how to get into more than the lotus position. Pretty soon it's obvious that there ain't a farm animal for miles around going to sit down for a week.
