COMMENTS: Years later, John Lennon would say he didn't believe in God. Here is the moment of epiphany, everyday horrors stripped of faith that there is a plan. John has seen blood and trauma, and sees the cosmic void. Not a pretty sight.
This song is one of the half dozen top famous examples of the studio based musical creation processes popularized by the Beatles. It is stitched together with Lennon's most of a song, coupled with Paul's verse of a whole nother, but complimentary song idea ("woke up, fell out of bed," or middle class normalcy as a weird dream), and adding the famous orchestral waves. This song would be practically impossible to perform live even close to like the record.
The genius of this song is sometimes lost to me due to overfamiliarity. The Big Daddy version of the song is here largely because they manage to remake the song so completely and thoughtfully as to remind me what a great songwriting acheivement it is.
Big Daddy is what you might call a "concept" group, or more cynically wrought, a gimmick. Their official story was that they were a 50's era rock group held captive by the Reds for years, and finally released in the late 80's. Therefore, they find themselves translating and feeling up all manner of modern hits in "50's styles." In practice, it works out like Sha Na Na, only with talent and brains.
Anyway, these bastards pulled the song absolutely inside out. A deadly serious song was converted into a clever joke, then turns out to backward and sideways be perfectly serious. They do the song Buddy Holly style, and substitute a recreation of the famous crash at the end of the song. That sounds like, and maybe is exploitative and/or gimmicky. As may be, but this goes back so far as to contrast Holly's gentility with the mortality awaiting him. The novelty of Peggy Sue rhythms on the main song loses interest as humor quickly, but the long suffering "dumbe-de-dumb, oh boy" arrangement really gives the whole song an empathy to share. And ultimately, the thing's not at all funny.
This recording really blind sided me when I first heard it. It shocked me, threw me off balance, and that isn't easily done.
