SONG TITLE: I LIKE BEER
PERFORMER: TOM T HALL
SONGWRITER: TOM T HALL
YEAR OF RELEASE: 1975
COMMENTS: Some would consider this song unworthy, not a "serious" song about important social issues. It is an ode to the joys of Tom's favorite beverage, and has no "deeper" meaning than a celebration of getting loose on a Friday night. And if you would be inclined not to like this, be glad if you didn't spend much time hanging in country bars for a couple of years after it came out.
The first line of explaining why this is here is appreciation for the pure clever songcraft. It is perfectly realized, with multiple hooks and an infectious simplicity. It is some form of a beer barrel polka, and you can really sing along around the bar while swinging your brewski to mark time.
Especially you can join in as he stops the band to bring in something called "The Irwin Steinberg Aggregation" singing heartily in slow acapella bliss "Maaaaakes him feeel mellll-low" By the sound of 'em and given the spirit of the song, I strongly suspect that they are simply a bunch of drunks Tom picked up in some bar.
Also, give Tom his regular credit for outstanding lyrics. Without screwing up his sing-along smoothness, he manages to detail the specific shortcomings of other drinks, the embarassment he causes his wife at nice restaraunts. "She's sipping vermouth, and she thinks I'm uncouth when I yell as the waiter goes by "I like beer.'"
And he dreams of a disturbing "heaven" without beer. Scary!
