Christians who believe in Biblical truth must also believe in women's inferiority
The status of women in American society has changed considerably in this century. Under the auspices of humanist-inspired egalitarianism, women have gained equal status with men, at least in theory and increasingly in fact.
The pressure for change has been constant. First, women were given suffrage. Later, careers for women became respectable. These days, women are not only allowed, but commonly encouraged to seek public office. Through the vice-presidential candidacy of Geraldine Ferraro, the American public has, in effect, been psychologically primed to accept a woman as president at some future time.
This course of events is, however, clearly in violation of the Christian foundation of our government ("one nation, under God") and of the Christian faith professed by most Americans; God simply does not intend for women to share equal rights or status with men. The Bible, throughout both testaments, contains many different instructions clearly subjugating women to men.
The bottom line on the issue can be found in I Corinthians 11:8,9, which says, "For the man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man." More narrowly, the Bible instructs us, several times, that the model for the relationship between man and wife is the relationship between Christ and the church.
"For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, and he is the savior of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything (Ephesians 5:22,23)."
The inferior status of all women, earned for them originally by Eve in Eden, is further cemented throughout the Bible in various prescriptions for their functioning in society. According to Numbers 30, women were to be allowed to make contracts only subject to the subsequent veto of their husband or father. In the New Testament, women are instructed to keep silent in church. If they have any questions, they are supposed to ask their husbands later (I Corinthians 14:340. Women aren't even supposed to speak in church, yet we have women in Congress and the Supreme Court.
Women holding public office are, simply, an affront to God almighty. Previous arguments and the whole thrust of Biblical talk about the role of women suggest this, but for the clincher, read I Timothy 2:11,12. j"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silenc." Pretty much rules out President Ferraro, doesn't it?
Properly, women shouldn't even be voting, when you get right down to it. Either that, or you have to throw the Bible out the window. If you accept the Bible as the revealed word of a living God, then you'd best pay attention to what he is saying to you. Through the Bible, he says in slightly differing ways over and over that men are supposed to run things and women are to serve the men. Politics is men's business, and women simply shouldn't be poking their noses in where they don't belong. Hey, this may be a bitter pill for some of you, but I'm not making this stuff up; it's in the Bible. If you don't like this policy, take it up with God.
Men have their proper role and women have theirs. There is an old cliche that says women should be kept barefoot and pregnant. This may be overstating the case somewhat, but as Christians, we must accept that there is a lot of truth in that old cliche.
