Congratulations to Elvis Costello and the Attractions, 2003 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees!
He burst onto the music scene in 1977 with the vitriol and determined rage of the current punk rock movement, but he was contrary to that movement in his encyclopedic knowledge of modern pop music, no doubt a garden shed full of old records. Plus, his band could actually play their instruments.
He was also extremely articulate, and had a melodic gift far beyond anyone else associated with punk, or new wave, or whatever label you wish to apply to that rock and roll Protestant reformation movement.
From his own emotional turmoil and self-doubt, nay, self-loathing, he continues to create a body of work amazing both in it's diversity of styles (rock, r&b, country, Broadway) and in the way it all ultimately fits together as an organic whole. He has given comfort, catharsis, and artistic inspiration now to several generations of musical connoisseurs and troubled souls the world over.
