Frankie Valli's Groovy Threads, 1971
Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons performed "Let's Hang On" on Top of the Pops in 1971. Watching the video years later, I'm really struck by their hip 1971 threads. Frankly, they looked better in proper normal suits, per their sharp classic images from 1963 and 1964. As a straight white boy of Kentuckian heritage, I don't presume to be much of a fashion critic. Nonetheless, this appearance on video back to back with their classic look struck me funny.
In fairness, these outfits are well made. Someone went to considerable effort to design these clothes, and get matching freaky green and blue outfits. There was some design logic or something. Plus, even Bob Gaudio's groovy beard is carefully trimmed and groomed - distinctly NOT hippy style. With those open, wide collars I'm seeing Saturday night fever to come. In any case, they're too well groomed to be mistaken for dirty hippies.
Most importantly though, they're singing a legitimate pop song. "Let's Hang On" is a good professional quality pop song with a strong melody. It's sure no pretentious tuneless hippy dippy crap.
