The Four Seasons "Saturday's Father" - 1968 images

In 1968, Four Seasons keyboard player and principle songwriter Bob Gaudio traded out his usual writing partner to work with Jake Holmes, who eventually made a big mark as a jingle writer responsible among other things for "Be a Pepper" and "Raise your hands if you're Sure."  For this project, they wrote an obviously artistically ambitious album that might fruitfully be considered as their answer to Pet Sounds, calling it The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette, featuring this song "Saturday's Father."  It's about children of divorce who only get to have a father on Saturdays.  It's a beautiful sad song.

This video is an interesting curiosity as well, from The Kraft Music Hall broadcast of 7-3-1968.  It's framed like it's a live performance, with the group singing in front of a studio audience.  But they're obviously not playing instruments, and you can hear lots of weird studio stuff they couldn't be doing live.  They don't seem to have microphones.

But then most of the video is a dramatic illustration of the song, a nicely made video of the joyful but all too brief day with Daddy - and the sad tears at the end as they say goodbye for another week.
